Snowhigh El Primo Mexican Punto Rojo Seed Increase

Going to document another seed increase this season, this time it’ll be El Primo Mexican Punto Rojo via Snowhigh Seeds. Anyone grown or have experience with these?

Sharing partially to document and partially as a bat signal for folks who have these or any line breeding they’ve done with these to widen the gene pool and keep this line going into the future.

These are 10 years old, germinated with the assistance of a fulvic acid soak. Currently 60% have germinated, will update that as time goes on.

Here’s the description via Snowhigh and an image of the first plant to sprout. Narrow leaves with colorful cotyledon on the underside.

Description: ‘El Primo’ means ‘the best’, and is a tribute to the Mexican God, ‘Smoking Mirror’. A rare variety of Western Mexico Punta Roja with an astringent aroma and taste… Simple, yet elegant. Its my belief that Mexicans like this may have been the source material in eventual hybrids that formed the gas/fuel strains we know and love today, but without the interference from modern breeding. Growing landrace and heirloom strains gives one the palette to discern quality and learn what they like about modern cannabis strains. Plants grow upright, tall, and form buds along the upright stems, forming larger flowers at the tips. Resin is good to great depending on phenotype… some reek and others are more subtle. Great strain for breeding as this is a unique line.Flowering times finish outdoors in early November to early December. Flowering indoors is roughly 16-18 weeks.

Nice to see you got some to sprout. I have a pack of these too so definitely good to know they’re still lively. I also have this one crossed to Colombian red hair from Snow. We definitely need to keep these heirlooms going! I’m looking forward to seeing these babies grow up!

Nice, know elpolloloco did some f2 with a pack he had as well so that right there brings the OG genepool up to 20+ plants potentially, think we’ll be in good shape to carry these forward. You have plans to run yours soon?

I don’t have any plans so far but definitely don’t want to wait too long. I didn’t realize they were almost 10 years old already. I’m focusing on the Jamaican Blood klot next. If I don’t get lucky with those I’ll start the different Snowhigh Mexicans for everyone. Doing some Nangarhar Afghani F2’s and Drawohs Chocolate Thai F2’s repros now.

Very cool, you’ll like the afghanis there’s a bunch of variety in the line. I got them in 2019 from the person who had sourced them and have grown out about 30 between myself and a neighbor who grows. Some really cool narrow leaf and huge broadleaf plants there. Some of the narrow leaves have a really pleasant smooth heady effect with no comedown, great for socializing.

Hope you have success with the JBK that one seems special and know a lot of people have had a hard time getting them to pop. May luck be in your favor my friend!

Good luck, are you dropping all and doing an open pollination run?
@Elpolloloco ran these and would be a good source of answers to your questions.

Thank you, yes running the whole pack and not going to cull anything. Might do a selected run alongside it if I have the time/attention to spare on that.

Good note - elpolloloco has been really helpful we’ve already passed a few messages regarding the el primo

I have been wanting to run the Smoking Mirrors. I only have seeds from a reproduction of them, though. I will be following along. Thank you for sharing this grow here @HighDesert.

Nice! Yea seems like a couple folks have done a repro on them but not a ton of info out there surprisingly. Whenever you grow them out share some pictures would be neat to see the different expressions :v:

Happy to follow along and hope you have much success. I ran the Pelo Rojo Especial last year (Punta Roja x Punto Rojo) and crossed it with Dolores. Huge seeds, crazy leafy spears and resisted branching as if its life depended on it. :joy:

Happy to offer a few of those if you ever wanna inject some Punta back into the line and see where the Mex melting pot goes (only got about 50 seeds total or I’d offer a bunch).
