I’ve had this awesome GSC pheno for over 5 years now. Never had any issues with her until a couple years ago when I started noticing strange symptoms. Slow, stunted growth, leaves growing twisted and malformed, weird leaf discolorations/deficiencies, flower far less quality than she used to produce. No matter what I tried I haven’t been able to solve it. Past several months I’d just been convinced she got infected with HLV.
I don’t currently have a good picture that better illustrates the issues I have with her indoors. Basically new growth starts out clean but older leaves start twisting and getting these white spots all over them before eventually shriveling up and dying and the cycle just keeps repeating
But this spring I planted two of my struggling clones outside, directly in the ground and they’ve grown flawlessly. Now in October and more than half way through flower she’s producing flowers like she used to. Good trich coverage already with still 3-4 weeks left, loud floral gas terps. I seriously don’t know what to think now. Has anyone else experienced this?
Hows the undersides of the leaves look any visible bugs or black dots/aka bug poopey? I cant speak to hlvd since thankfully i havent had experience with it (knock on wood.)
There’s no bugs or mildew. This pheno is very resistant to powdery mildew. Never once had it in 5 years. Any spots you happen to see on a leaf is just debris the wind blew on or bird shit stain
I’ve considered getting it tested, but even if it came back positive how do you explain it growing perfectly fine when planted outside? I have her isolated from the rest of my genetics for the time being until I figure out how to proceed
What it does remind me of is some skunk strains that need to be grown outdoors otherwise they have major issues inside. Maybe it’s a genetics issue then
Inbreeding depression: When cannabis is bred using a small, limited gene pool, recessive and often undesirable traits can become more prevalent over time. With repeated inbreeding, such as self-pollination, overall plant health, growth rate, and yield can significantly decrease.
Genetic bottleneck: Many modern cannabis strains are created by crossing a limited number of parent plants, which results in a restricted genetic bottleneck. With each successive generation, breeders who continue to select and cross only these few related plants can inadvertently lose genetic diversity, making the strain less robust.
Lack of selection: Natural, outcrossing plant species like cannabis require diligent selection to maintain quality. Historical accounts from colonial America show that even back then, hemp growers observed a decline in their strains over just a few generations if they didn’t consistently select the best plants for breeding.
You pulling them off a mother plant? Thats really the only way to keep the genetics fully intact but have to outcross here and there even then i believe.
No mother plant, taking clones from clones. I’ve considered it being a genetics thing as well. Some kind of degradation or mutation over time. But this outdoor grow has convinced me the genetics are still intact and still possible for her to reach her full potential
It’s a good practice to keep her fresh. It’s hard to identify the problem, but the situation will be worse with an old lady. For the detail, what you’re dodging is a somaclonal drift. It’s not “purely” a genetic drift as we understand mutations, but more an “overwashed” state with the intensity of traits.
It’s hard to recognize a GSC in this context but she’s not that thin and stretched in veg ^^ You should start by this corner. The soil doesn’t look like too packed but obviously the roots are not in peace.
You can test for the viroid but it can be as dumb that a new brand of soil and an infected batch with a systemic fungi or an old bottle of nutes that you refuse to throw away (it’s a testimony), a bulb or a panel fucked up …
Take one, remove the pot, take a photo of the root mass to share (and smell it, nose close). And try to remember if you changed something radically two years ago.
Have you changed your medium or nutes in 2 years? Check your old logs i bet somethings changed to make them all of a sudden grow twisted. ive never had that happen before after growing something several years.
Has to be an issue from outside to inside. Something is going on indoors the plant doesnt like.
That leave twist can be genetics or it can be root bound lots of plants when they are root bound do that especially if they have a lot of Afghan genetics
