Software to organize a garden

Hello all. Up until a year ago, I was a hobby computer programmer for 20 years (backend math/science/algorithmic code, not frontend stuff). I’m thinking of getting back into it to create software to document my grows, organize my gardens and seed collection, and perhaps even a frontend one day to be able to distribute some seeds to those in need online.

I’m curious if anyone has experience in programming, either frontend or backend development. I would like to brainstorm back and forth with someone else, and make it a collaborative journey. Or, if you know anyone that might be interested, I’d be grateful if you asked them. No pay, just for fun, so must have a passion for creating things in your free time (no set schedule, work together in our free time).

Thanks.

Edit: This really deserves a separate topic, but I want to reach out to the really nice people that have been following my journey and know how much I need to occupy my time during this depression and home-boundness, so starting here.

Check out the “grow with jane” app. the thing does pretty much everything you need, with a simple way to add photos, and tag to the right plant.

Seedtime was another good site, for garden tracking, with a lot on the calendar tracking.

I’m a linux sysadmin from way back. but. i’d rather not try to re-invent the wheel, when there’s some nice wheels out there

Retired Race engineer.
Database manager and developer.

My preference would be to do it in a database, I lean toward relational ones but it seems the new trend is elsewhere. But I am old school I know how to set ignition points.

date of entry
seed name
source
quantity
condition
packaging
supplier notes
transaction notes
personal notes

You can create any field you think you need but here is an example.

I am using Obsidian for my seed tracking needs…

You can write filtered queries with an SQL-like language…

And have documents detailing each strain…

I also made a big canvas with everything on it, though it isn’t especially useful.

I am also keeping my grow-logs in it, but I haven’t really done anything especially sophisticated there.

Programmer here. Also old school relational db type person. And strictly Linux 100% of the time (although, I used to work on Solaris systems, and messed with FreeBSD a lot in the early days)

I use Potnanny to control environments in my tents. Though it never got much interest or traction, so it’s been stagnant for a while. Works for me, so I guess it’s ok.

I work mostly in backend stuff. So my front end UI/GUI are always pretty basic and bleak… but they work.

I’ve also been working on python/flask web tool for shopping/distributing seeds.

Oh interesting, so have I! I wanted to rethink the take a pack leave a pack thread. I’ve been tinkering with the design. I like the spirit of the thread but wanted to build out a more formal workflow for it. Cool to see others think about the problem domain

I automated by label generation to save me a bunch of time sending out pucks.

I’ve been using Obsidian for a lot of things lately, but I haven’t gotten into the SQL filters, because I need to teach myself how to do that first.

I really like the ability to make forms for quick/easy repeated data entry.
