Specializing in hot peppers

Any recommendations for peppers to grow in SoCal and for beginners ? dont know shit about peppers but i want more things to grow lol

Truly, throw down some seeds that seem basic:
Jalapeños, Fresno, Poblano, a Hatch varietal, or, if your into heat, habañero.
The most incredible thing the first time I ate a homegrown pepper, the thing that struck me the most was: “This is a fucking jalapeño?!”
It was unlike any jalapeño I ever had from the store.
So grow something you know. The seeds are cheap, and I guarantee it’ll blow your away.

My favorites last season were the Zapotec Jalapenos, really vigorous plant and fantastic flavor

Got mine from Baker seed company although you can find them many places

I scanned through the last year of this thread, and I didn’t see anyone mention my favorite, the sugar rush peach.

If you like the fruity taste of a really unique, tropical pepper…this one is for you! They’re fairly prolific, grow reasonably easily, and do really nicely on cannabis fertilizer runoff (lol).

I was able to get a bumper crop last year from about 20 plants that I grew in solo cups; at the end of the season, I did hard prune, and then kept them inside. They’re back outside now and getting ready to put some into my planters.

Seriously delicious eating, and one of the most uniquer pepper flavors I’ve ever encountered in many years of growing plants from seed.

Heat is “close to a Jalapeno” but some are more mild. I also had a couple of plants that were much hotter, more in line with a habanero, so there’s some variability to be found if you’re looking to make crosses. One or two of the plants had fruits so mild you could eat them like snacking peppers, barely the kick of Frank’s Red Hot sauce, those were my favorite as they’re best when eaten fresh and ripe.

Lovely plants, all the heat I need for ‘normal foods’ with a few standouts that are crowd pleasers for the heat-freaks.

Sugar rush peach is a favorite of my wife’s. It is a delicious pepper. But yeah, one will be mild as can be, and the next will take your head off haha. Could select for a narrower range of heats if you felt like spending a coupla few seasons selecting for it.

Bout time!
These are the same seeds I sent out to every body. My “share” was maybe 20% larger than everyone else’s, I dropped them all on this Applebee’s seed tray. First one came up end of last week. They’re harder starting than the other citron seeds I started this year, idk why. I tried to do a better job with the seeds I did in this batch, knowing I was sending them out. That’s probably why they’re being more complainy haha. But they do start, hope they just keep popping steady from here out.

Ever run into those strain names that sound plain icky? Sugar Rush Peach is basically the polar opposite. Spring has sprung, but the peps aren’t allowed to leave the house yet. I’m tremendously excited to see fruit this year.

You guys really inspired me to grow out some different pepper varieties this year! I’m more into mild and sweet peppers myself but all the power to you super hot lovers

I ordered a bunch of seeds from this site pepper joes before looking around and seeing reviews bomb them for never sending out the right seeds. Wonderful. What sites are you guys using for your mild pepper purchases?

My favorite seed banks for veggie seeds are High Mowing seeds, Johnny’s selected seed, Baker Creek, Botanical Interests, and Burpee.
They all have a decent range of sweet peppers.

Normally I start them way early and end up with monster plants angry with me for still being in solos at the end of May haha.

Same here, I over do it, too early, and suffer the consequences :wink:

This time i am trying to not do any transplanting. Not sure how that will go, but cell to ground sounds like alot less work, for probably similar results. I have been doing mass tom rows for almost 20 years now. I am always transplanting, just forever, so this time they may go out small and early, we will see,

I’ve got 2 bhut jolokia running, 2 Mango Habs, 2 7-pot Douglahs, and seedlings of 4 aji varieties (gold, dulce, omnicolor, fantasy), this year.
Range from less than 1,000 SHU all the way to 1,000,000 plus!
