Starting seed breeding company?

Best thing you can do is to give AS MUCH DETAIL AS POSSIBLE about the plants you breed. The most respected breeders in the game often have a dizzying amount of info per plant, per seed run, etc. Think about it, when you’re seed-shopping which breeders or brands do you gravitate towards, and why? --often for me, it’s the breeders that publish the most detailed info.

So I guess the best thing you can do is get to know different breeders and approach the one you trust the most. Most of life is the same way.

only the “boutique/exotic” breeders do that.

But you know the old saying. . .there’s an ass for every seat. If someone wants to pay 100 dollhairs per bean because Gilberto signed their pack, that’s their money not mine :man_shrugging:

Yeah, like Professor P. Some of the best descriptions and more info, than 99% of the breeders out there.

with the saturation in the seed market these days id caution against opening a new business in this space. the margins are high but only if you value your time at zero. even people like Equilibrium genetics who have been around forever are having a hard time making good coin.

i prefer to make pollen chucks and give those out for free. i still feel like a “breeder” but i dont have to go through most of the hassle dealing with people problems

Yep, that’s really shitty as well.

Ha ha ha. That is some funny shit man.

when I started breeding I had no intention of putting seed on the market. Back then my work was all about creating/finding new and unique commercial crop strains for me and my circle. I was also given lots of seed by my mentor and his circles to hunt thru for keepers and this also led to pollen chucks and breeding work. I was always a grower who wanted nothing to do with limelight or recognition. I never entered cups with my work and still haven’t to this day.
making seed and breeding became a compulsive disorder for me LOL
After my break from growing I returned to it at the urgings of my friends and when I started making seed again I decided I would put my work out there but only as donations to worthy causes for thier fundraising. People seemed to like the seed and some urged me to do more work. So several years back I started the strawberry hill seed co and since then I have been doing my thing. Am I making money? Not really but I’m really not that well known so I don’t even worry about it too much. Yes it would be nice to see a couple grand a month coming in from seeds as I am disabled and have no income after being royally screwed over by worker’s comp. So this is what I have that I consider to be one of my valuable skills… breeding cannabis. Pretty much all I have left .

So I got back into breeding at the urgings of my friends but I do it out of necessity and love for the plant. One day, if I keep at it, I may be able to call it a financial success but really, my expectations are pretty low considering all the competition out there in the breeding game.
My work has been out in the community since 2017 so 2024 makes the 8th year I have been putting my work out there. 3 years doing donations and the past 5 as a seed co dropping with GLG and now growingupganja. I like to think I am building a positive reputation but after 8 years I’m still not making a couple grand a month LOL but then again I don’t drop very often and don’t have a large portfolio out there. What I really enjoy and what really makes me feel good is seeing folks growing my seeds and being happy with the results. I think I value that feeling over money all day long.
But let’s be real… most breeders aren;t dropping beans just because they love the plant… it’s a job, a career if you will , to many folks out there. Some are disabled like me and this is all they have to fall back on .

to end my ramble , if you want to be a breeder you have to at some point put your work out there for people to grow and provide feedback. This is where forums like this one are valuable and special places where you can get your creations out to growers , for free of course, and start to get unbiased feedback about your work. Putting beans on consignment with a trusted seedbank would be the next step as most if not all seedbanks out there won’t pay up front for seeds from unknown breeders.
Bottom line… you have to really love this plant and the work involved in crafting excellent seed and be able to mentally tolerate the ups and downs you will have as you “build your brand”. I can’t even tell you guys how many mental battles I have had over throwing in the towel… many of my friends here can attest to it as I have admitted such to them many times LOL

Hey @SHSC-1 . “So this is what I have that I believe to be one of my valuable skills……breeding cannabis. Pretty much all I have left. “ That is a beautiful statement. I would like to say that I have the utmost respect for you and all the other breeders and growers on OG. You guys are truely my heros. Thank you for keeping this plant alive and thriving. If it is all you have left, I believe it is all you need.

With a undisclosed white label baggie of freebies fresh off the Shucking floor labeled as Mystery seeds that end up more times that needed to be actually better than the pack you bought and you have to go off of Overgrow and ICmag pics to have a ballpark guess as to what it is
