By my reckoning there has to be some plant biology to support all that THC right? Personally I struggle to conceive that ANY plant could be more than a quarter THC.

It’s partially how the sample is presented / handled. They’ll separate the sample into a couple of different lots and analyze whatever it is that they’ve received. I believe flowers (for potency) are first desiccated to some nominal water content prior to weighing. Terpene analysis is likely refrigerated until needed or immediately placed into solvent. I’ve been meaning to have a conversation with the lab director on some of their procedures.
When you look at the photos of the samples as presented to the lab, a good job trimming does appear to make a difference as you’ve removed the mass that doesn’t contribute much to the percentage of cannabinoids (compared to the total mass). So, what you’d probably want to hand them is basically the most tricome laden portions of the flower. You’re trying to not give them seed laden buds or a bunch of stem and certainly not the whole plant.
A good deal of the “error” could occur here as it entirely depends on what you give them lot to lot. Seeds, stems, leaves, etc could have a significant negative effect on the analysis. You could also sprinkle on some kief or add some synthetic terpenoids to “cook” the sample. I don’t know if anyone does this, though.
So when we say 25%, we are talking about the juiciest part of the plant. The well trimmed and handled flowers do show differences but the photos of the low percentage cannabinoid samples illustrate the bulk of the poorly handled/trimmed samples as submitted.

Cool data
I like the middle bands you can see in there. There’s clearly a set of plants bred mostly for THC, secondarily for CBD hemp and then a sparse middle band of plants from breeders who were clearly going for 1:1 ~ 1:2 ratios.
As a stoned nerd, once I stopped to think about how the data was being displayed, I became impressed at the person who came up with this plot style. It’s kind of brilliant.

Data spans from around mid-July of last year until today (9/19/2020). For your perusal.
Keep in mind these are from different growers but the test results are from the same lab (state certified). These have been sorted by total cannabinoids where the totals for each type may consist of THC and CBD in different states of decomposition (e.g. THCa, THCva, THC, etc). Was just browsing around, Apothecary Genetics has Sunset Sherbert as regular seeds. A recreation highly probable. There are some on-line sources for clones but, likewise, not sure if you can necessarily trust them if you’re trying to get the original. Most of the descriptions these vendors have mirror the Apothecary description.

its not the plant , its a highly manicured bud sample, light fluffy buds can come real high, but thc is a different word then it used to be . Total thc is a US gov mandated word, meant to decieve

Correct, Max THC in the data I’ve posted is a calculated value:
Max THC = THC + (THCa * 0.877)

By the way Highgrade labs in okc does walk in testing and dont care if its personal stash or commercial. They were very reasonable.
They only wanted a gram to test.

This tends to confirm our findings earlier on the positive correlation of terpene content versus total cannabinoids for THC type cultivars (type I and type II). This paper does not detail the inverse correlation we’ve seen for the CBD type cultivars (type III) suggesting an area for additional analysis.

I just tested a batch at ProVerde in Milford MA. It was 115 bucks with the terpene profile. I like these folks and will do biz there from now on.
I would really like a solution that I could buy that tests for terpenes. I say that the MY DX and the Purple one don’t test for terpene.
