Strayfox Rollin 88 Repro Run

Finally getting around to setting up a Co-Op grow report for Strayfox’s Rollin 88 (Tranquil Elephantizer Remix x Pinequeen). Odd because I’m already a month in and already know the pitfalls I’ve fallen into. As not too many other people have been privy to the trials and tribulations that have already occurred, hang out tight, it’s gonna be a bumpy ride.

I bought my pack of Rollin 88 from DCSE’s auction knowing I’d likely put it toward a Co-Op run. Both the mom and dad in this cross have Snow Lotus as their respective dads, with different moms. The mom of Rollin 88 has Bodhi’s Killer G as its mom, which I was hoping would come out in the offspring as from what I’ve heard it tends to dominate… we shall see. Dad on this one is Bodhi’s Snowqueen, i.e. Pinequeen x Snowlotus.

I cracked open the pack and put the seeds in to soak on July 4th:

They were in medium by July 8th. From there, I had four plants emerge, but lost two to four to something I don’t recall seeing before… the “seed” casing (technically it’s an achene with the seed inside it) adhered to the tap root rather than the cotyledon. Annoying because you see the cotyledons about to come up above the surface level of the medium… and then nothing, no further development. After a couple days of waiting I investigated what was going on and saw the problem. I managed to gently remove the casing from a few and found a club tap root. Those seeds never seemed to develop beyond that point.

I figured it was a bit of a fluke and made contact with @neuro who had generously offered to donate his pack of Rollin 88 to the cause (I don’t usually like using other people’s packs because it feels like a lot of responsibility, a fear that proved to be grounded in reality in this one case). Neuro kindly zipped that pack to me, and wanting not to get too far behind I cracked that open and put those in to soak as well.

Everything seemed to start off well with those as well, soaking was uneventful, and I put them into medium and waited.

And waited… and waited.

Patience running out I gently dug around in the medium and generally found nothing had fully popped. I did see one set of coytledons though, so fingers-crossed there might be hope.

Nope, same affliction as several of my seeds, with the weirdly adhered casing. Again I gently removed it and hoped for the best. Again, no luck.

At this point I was kicking myself pretty hard for not treating that second pack as a problem-pack that needed special treatment (i.e. try to start two, see how that goes, if it doesn’t go well, try a different more intensive method). Which brings us up to a few days ago.

So here’s where this problem project (I intended to write project and started writing problem and figured it was apt) stands: four seedlings are vegging. One is a bit of an outlier in terms of height, I’m hoping that one proves to be male. Working from four plants was very much not the way I was hoping this would go. Not the diversity of parents I was hoping for to make a good representative F2 generation, but when life gives you lemons…

Rollin 88s are the four on the left. Tall outlier is one up from the bottom.

My plan is to veg til on or about September 1st, then flip to flower and hope for the best. If I can find another pack in the meantime I’ll likely jump on that, but I’m not holding my breath.

More updates to come.

Anything with Pinequeen is a plus since it contains Shimla that was sourced directly from India. Could get so many phenos out of the F2’s. Can’t go wrong with TE or Snow Lotus either.

This one will be very interesting to watch, best of luck brother @yardgrazer

Down for the ride

Question? Have you thought of hitting up strayfox to ask about the issues and possibly get a replacement pack? He seems to be pretty generous from what i have seen?

I hadn’t thought about trying that… I think they might be pretty old packs but I suppose it might be worth a try.

I started having that issue with the shells staying stuck on the taproots after years of growing and never having it happen before. Multiple strains, different breeders same problem. I never figured out if I was doing something different to cause this, but I haven’t had it happen since I started directly sowing. It’s only been a few grows so I’m hoping that solves the problem

It’s pretty hard not to blame myself for the way this has gone so far. If I had only gone two at a time trying different germ methods on that second pack maybe I would’ve had a better outcome. Not much I can do about it now.

I feel like there are so many factors that go into an unsuccessful germination (I had great success germinating earlier in the season using the same methods but as we all know that’s no guaranty of future success).

Bringing lots of positivity to your garden my friend

I just had a bad run myself…its hard to admit and easy to be tough on yourself when you have some experience…but except for cannabis seeds, you see people always germining extra because theres so many factors and you can get everything right, but still have them mess up

I guarentee it is not you. My only thought that having Indian genes, the seeds may need a warmer soil than we are used to? To germinate properly.
Who knows they may have not been stored well before Paul at DCSE got them.

These seeds seem to be especially SMFS. Stubborn Mother F*cking Seeds.

Sorry for the struggle @yardgrazer here’s hoping you get great genes from the 4!

I’d cut yourself some slack. Sometimes shit just happens despite your best efforts and is beyond your control. Don’t get discouraged. The pendulum will swing the other way!

True, true…

Reality is I only self-flagellate when I think about it, which thankfully I don’t have that much time for (outdoor plants to water, indoor plants to fiddle with, seeded plants to take down, cuttings to take, pickle festival to attend).
