Subcool Jilly Bean 2025 grow 🤞

10 seeds donated by @VerdantGreen
5 seeds donated by @BudWhisperer
20 seeds donated by @Weednerd.Anthony
These seed are pre divorce Miz Jill are a f2 strain. These are from the original clone called “Melvin” Space Queen

Subcool told Weedmaps they picked up the Orange Velvet clone, called “Melvin” at the time, roughly around 2006 from a nearby family that had the mother plant. They crossed the female with their own Space Queen male, which was the last remaining seeds of its kind left at the time.

Named after MzJill – as well as for its candy-citrus, limonene and pinene-dominant scent profile and tropical jelly bean flavor, Jilly Bean was among High Times’ Top Ten Strains of 2007. It was named the magazine’s best Sativa of 2014 and took 1st place at the Adam Dunn Show Invitational.

Jilly Bean is no longer carried by TGA Genetics and is now in the hands of MzJill’s seed bank, Oregon-based MzJill Genetics. According to Subcool, the Jilly Bean currently bred by MzJill is an open-pollinated F2 hybrid version of the strain.

"I have received seeds from @VerdantGreen of 2 packs of 5 each of Jilly Bean from Subcool.

@VerdantGreen[/quote]

Thanks @G-paS for posting that. Thanks everyone !
Hopefully you will have better luck with these. They are old seeds but been in my freezer for the 12 or so years since i bought them… they look ok, a couple are a bit small but hopefully they will pop !

"I worked with the action group, rather than grow out the clones and do another reversal of the three female only plant, I will grow the subcool seeds gifted from @VerdantGreen this fall instead.

The people on the list with have first dibs."

“I just dropped the first 5 a week ago. 4 cracked after 48 hr water soak and 72 hours in paper towel 2 had little tap roots. They have been in a soil/WC for 48 hours now and nothing yet.”

As you can see, one looked funny went right to the bottom. I had read this weren’t viable and it wasn’t

“Nothing made it above ground. I will give them more time and hope”

"Yes!
I am going to get some more proxied and try a different method on some of the seeds form '17 that I don’t have any information for them.
They were stored improperly before I learned to on here.

So, if they germ yours will as yours were stored right."

I dropped the 2nd 5 and they all floated.

Nothing made it.

I have been reading and working to figure out the best way to germinate old seeds.
These seeds are original and came from @weedNerd.Anthony (5-5-10 for 20 seeds and @budwhisperer donated there five.

I bought almost $100 in chemicals. I haven’t used those yet but I will try different methods on the rest here.

First 5 seeds from NorStar donated by @weednerd.Anthony.

  1. I scuffed them for a long time 10-20 min.
  2. I washed in a 2:1 distilled water and 3% peroxide. I agitated for 10-20 min.
  3. Then they were washed in plain distilled water.
  4. Then I tried to cut pointy end of the seeds off (This was my first try and I don’t think I got enough off all but 1 and sort of off another.
  5. Then they went on JP’s EC method.
  6. I soaked in a full-power distilled water mixed as recommended for ~18 hours.
  7. This was put on a heat pad set at 80 and covered with towels to keep in the dark.

Two days later one with the most cut off had a ¼” tail and the sort of one had a little tail peeking out.
The next day the one had a ½” tail and went into a Root Riot cube. It went under a light and when it stretched to 4” and went into a solo cup and the steam buried to 1” of steam. Finger crossed as I lost some or the other ten after this point.

  5. I soaked in a full-power distilled water mixed as recommended for ~18 hours.
  6. Super Thrive was added to this.
  7. This was put on a heat pad set at 80 and covered with towels to keep in the dark.

2 put out nice tail, the other 3 just tips and all went into Root Riot.
1 has rotted and two haven’t done any thing yet

This is the 3rd try. I started will the HappyMan seed. I tried to revers the 3 fem plants. It was a disaster.
I got 10 Subcool seeds from @VerdantGreen. All I got was a few with a root point up to 1/4".
None made it any further.
I now have 5 TGA/Subcool from @BudWhisperer and 20 from @Weednerd.Anthony .

The people that signed-up 'ed from the September '23 list have first dibs. When I flip to 12/12 I will work on deleting people from the list that haven’t been here in a year. The people that didn’t claim Spring '22 and fall '24 will also be removed.

Keep watching.

Sending good vibes your way !!

With older seeds that almost exactly how I start mine too. Did a bunch of testing and that’s damn closed to the method I found worked the best !

But if I get any kind of tap root I immediately plant it in soil, BUT I only bury the tap root. I leave the shell above the surface.

I find that older seeds don’t have a lot of energy to push up through the dirt.

But if you stick the tap root in soil it will slowly get what it needs and burrow down. After that it will push up the stem.

At least that’s what I have tried and had success with when starting older seeds.

I really can’t wait to see this journey of yours :muscle:
I’m excited to see how they all turn out.

I definitely know you can do it @G-paS :100:%

Good luck germinating these. I hope you get a high percentage that make it to
the seedling stage. It’s a cliff hanger for sure when working with older seeds.
