Howdy @setgoals, I believe that’s an accurate definition of what a landrace is, but once that landrace is taken from it’s region of origin and grown and/or reproduced in a distinctly different location it’s not technically considered a landrace anymore (to my knowledge) and would be better classified as an heirloom.
That’s being extremely technical though as I’m pretty sure many of the “landraces” being traded on here are also from stocks reproduced outside the traditional regions of origin so it’s sort of a blurry line in that regard. So Maui Wowie from seed stocks produced on Maui would technically be a landrace if they have been grown there long enough to acclimate into something unique and distinct to the island, while Maui Wowie produced from those seeds in a distinctly different geographic location would be an heirloom. The same could apply to any other landrace, if it’s seeds from the specific traditional region of creation it’s a landrace and if it’s seed from those original landrace seeds produced outside of their traditional region of origin they would be considered heirlooms. I think the determining criteria is based around the population fitness of a given seed stock and how that relates to a given “landrace” region.
To me, the only landraces are things that are collected from their traditional regions of origin of which those varieties are named after. Meaning Vietnamese seeds must have been produced in Vietnam to be landrace Vietnamese, Colombian Gold in Colombia, Maui Wowie on Maui, and so on and so forth but that doesn’t really seem realistic in terms of this thread and more specifically what’s actually available in most collectors collections. Or what’s actually available from most retailers, except a few notable exceptions like for example some of The Real Seed Company catalog offerings who have a few varieties they sell that aren’t from reproductions and are direct region sourced landraces.
How all that applies to this thread in particular, I have no idea. I’m just a technical tech type of individual and enjoy the dialogue and discussion that’s being brought up and wanted to share. I personally think due to the rarity of actual landraces that heirlooms should also be allowed and included in this thread and it seems like most of the time those “hey that’s not an actual landrace” types like THH or Maui Wowie seem to get taken as quick as most anything else so it helps the thread moving along. Hey I thought 4 way landrace crosses like haze were welcome here, my bad. I have others i could post just always seems like heads are looking for tom’s. It goes fast. Hey bud it’s your thread I want to respect your wishes… My only thoughts on it would be Maui Wowie is probably oaxacan thai afghani but no one can say, it could also be hybridized with more modern things if introduced recently. It’s uncertain lineage is different from original haze, a very well and clearly defined 4 way hybrid of late 60’s sativa landraces.

As far as I can tell, MauiWowie is a cross that was originally made by the BOEL and is thought to be a Mexican/Afghani hybrid. It’s probably more apt to call it an in-bred-line than a Landrace. It’s not my thread, but I would also disqualify Hazes as they aren’t Landraces either, AND there’s a TS,LS thread specifically for Hazes and Sativa hybrids. What’s the point of having different TS,LS threads if people aren’t going to stick to the intended category?
Just my 2 cents.

My two cents: as the first post says, this thread is for landraces and landrace crosses, which was later elaborated to be up to a 4-way cross. There’s probably more cross activity than there is pure activity if one catalogued the thread. My sativa heirlooms/hybrids thread is meant to be more for haze hybrids than pure hazes, which I think belong here (but are allowable there). And my thread is sativa focused, while this is open to all landraces. If Maui Wowie was known to be a Mex landrace crossed with an Afghani landrace, I would assume it qualifies here as well. It’s the uncertainty that makes it ineligible.
