As someone who has resonated alot with Terrence Mckenna’s ideas, just presenting this as an introduction into Terrence and his interesting perspective on life & psyches.
A strange & interesting guy, with a knack for speaking… take everything he says with a grain of salt. I like thinking outside the box, & he has some pretty out there ideas. Wether or not you agree, it’s a guarenteed entertaining listen regardless.
Synopsis:
Terence McKenna was a philosopher, ethnobotanist, and psychonaut known for his advocacy of psychedelic substances as tools for expanding human consciousness. His philosophy combined elements of mysticism, cognitive science, and esoteric traditions, emphasizing the transformative power of psychedelic experiences in accessing higher states of awareness. He believed that these substances, particularly psilocybin mushrooms and DMT, were key to understanding the nature of reality, human evolution, and the limitations of language. McKenna also proposed the “Novelty Theory,” suggesting that time is accelerating toward a singularity of unprecedented complexity and innovation. His ideas often challenged mainstream materialism, arguing that reality is more fluid, interconnected, and shaped by consciousness than conventional science acknowledges.
Are you talking him or yourself im confused. I liked some of his ideas, but alot of it seems too out there . Not everything you experience taking psychs is an epiphany or insight although it may seem so at the time. Ive got several of his books fwiw. I hate mushrooms i always thought lsd was a supreme experience over psilocybin.
I’m talking about Terrence McKenna himself. Despite a bad trip and being too frightened to take mushrooms again he went around espousing the benefits and encouraging others to partake.
This was revealed in his brother Dennis’ biography.
Don’t take my word for it though. Here is just one of many articles that can put it more eloquently than I can.
Def wouldn’t take everything he says literal, I just find most of it entertaining. Everyone’s experiences with psych’s are subjective to the person taking them… not guarenteed to learn something profound everytime or at all.
Dennis has been on tons of podcasts criticizing Terrence’s ideas, either way take it all with a grain of salt!
I’ve always been a big believer in psychedelics myself. I grew up near a lot of cow fields and always had access to tons of mushrooms. I love LSD and until recently was apprehensive to try DMT because I watched my friends lose consciousness for about 10 minutes every time they smoked it. But a few years ago I tried it at a festival in a safe spot at our campground. And was absolutely amazed with my trip. Since then I’ve done it half a dozen times and always really enjoyed it. Peyote is also really enjoyable and I try to score some every time I’m in Mexico. I understand that people can have a bad trip but it really just comes down to your mental strength and how much tolerance you have for alternative realities. Terence has some good ideas but he was also very far out there for most people to follow along with.
I’ve had a lot of great and horrific experiences with mushrooms, sometimes a smaller dose with friends resulting in a simple giggly night, sometimes a heroic dose by myself… walls breathing, every patterned surface becoming animated, closed eye visuals turn to open eye visuals, audible hallucinations.
Such a vast difference in experiences depending on many things, obviously set and setting + dose & wether or not you do it alone. Tons of variables, subtle microdosing or reality obliterating 5g +
Some of the most interesting things I’ve experienced are group hallucinations. Like everyone seeing and hearing the exact same thing. That’s what turned something innocent and fun into a religious experience. When you have a tree turn into a face that talks to you and gives a message that everyone hears and remembers. Or when a group of people focus on a number that appears in their head. Then everyone writes down the number and like all five people have the same number. After you do it like 6 times and everyone has the same number. We’re talking sometimes a three digit number too. It’s just undeniable that reality is different than what we thought.
Repeatable findings in a group setting is interesting, have you ever read Rick Strassman’s the spirit molecule where they conducted controlled experiments using DMT interveniously & recorded tons of different subjects experiences?
Interesting read for sure!
100% this. 20 yrs ago I’d have done it if I were more exposed to it. Now, hell they sell vape cartridges of it I’m pretty much past the point of needing to “expand” myself, I’m very comfortable with my psych-boundaries at this point in my mid 40s
Yeah I know the book. It’s something that needs more studying to understand better. It’s a real way to prove that there’s more to consciousness than science will accept. It’s hard to refuse real documented evidence that can be repeated in a clinical setting
What’s cool about the vape pens is that there’s no commitment for the next 6 hours of the trip. It’s like dipping your feet in the water for 5 minutes and then coming out without much exhaustion like normal trips. I can’t believe I waited so long to do it. I’m almost 50 years old and still finding out new things every day
Don’t know if you follow ufology at all, another subject to take with a grain of salt… But there has been tons of talk about “psyonics” psychically gifted people being used in government programs to “summon” ufos
Wether it’s BS or not, crazy to think about how little we understand about consciousness. Is it something unique to us? Or nothing special at all
Yeah they call it remote viewing and it’s a real program used for spying by intelligence agencies. I met a former agent who verified it’s a real thing. He also said the movie the men who stare at goats was based on reality
We never stop learning, as we get older you’re faced with your own mortality more & more… I feel like psyches make you at least a little more comfortable with the idea of your consciousness transitioning into something other than whatever this is.
I agree but disagree at the same time Lsd is “cleaner” buzz visuals are more geometric in nature and more colorful while mushrooms are “dirty” or “dark” but the mushroom is intelligence you can ask the mushroom a question and it will answer it while Lsd is not its just a chemical alchemy it has no soul this is why i will choose the mushroom everytime
5g? I used to eat mushies til i got full i also grew up with fields all around
Just like this i would go out and fill 2 Walmart bags in 15mins
