The Atlantic Rainforest Experience

Welcome everybody, I decided to create this topic so I can share my experience growing outdoors for the first time and also to document the growth of the plants of so many generous people that sent seeds through giveaways or pm. I gotta say I really appreciate this since I was struggling to get access to seeds and they were not that great.

To introduce myself: I live in the southern shore of Brazil, The Atlantic Rainforest is the ecosystem surrounding me. The climate is mild, ranging from 5ºC in the coldest day of winter (average 17ºC) to 38-40ºC in the hottest days of summer (27ºC average), very humid and windy. The longest days are 13h light and the shortest 11h so we can flower outside almost all year around. The only bad season for outdoor is october/november because it rains a lot, like for 20 days in a roll and it can rain 500mm in a month or more. I live a walking distance from a State Park with untouched rainforest where I collect microorganisms and seeds and spring water, and have been studying the soil and growing techniques adapted to this environment.

I grow ganja since 2015 when my mom had cancer (we used cannabis to help her deal with the treatment) and started using myself to treat anxiety, depression and nausea. Untill then I just used brick weed to get high, but growing it changed it all for me. Since then I have been on and off growing. In 2022 I lost all my gear to a fire, a short circuit in the grow room almost killed us and burned down my whole house. Thankfully I woke up in time to take everyone out safely and call the firemen, who came fast and prevented any more damage and even decided not to report the tents so I wouldnt get into more trouble. Took me a long time to recover from that and I still cant feel safe with the tent on while I am out of the house. I work as a cook and have been interested in growing food and planting since I was a kid and always found a way to work around farmers.

I am moving to a place with good privacy and decided to try my first outdoor grow. In Brazil it is still illegal, but recently they decriminalized up to 6 females and we are 2 people here so that’s the number I am working with. Also went to the doctor and got a prescription which would help me if I get caught. I will protect the grow area by building a bamboo fence around it so any curious neighbours wont be able to see anything.

I tought this would make a nice opportunity to put my readings to test and try to work with tropical forest soil. A friend working in a new housing project got me some soil from the site, with amazing characteristics and already full of mycelium and life. I screened it and mixed it with some vermicompost I have access to for free and has a great quality (it is a project with compost piles we sponsor and their compost is tested and is dope) and some aeration like peat, perlite, rice hulls, biochar, coco, some aged woodchips and other stuff. I mixed them 1:1:1.
Also added amendments, rock dust (rochagem), phosphate (fosfato natural), gypsum (gesso agrícola), bone meal (farinha de ossos), bokashi, kelp meal (farinha de algas), Oyster flour (farinha de ostras), limestone (calcário), neem meal (torta de neem).
I will veg the plants in 8 liter pots (2 gal) till I figure out the sex, and then move the males to the tent indoor and the females to the bigger pots.
I have 4x 80 liters beds (21 gal) and one 100 liters (26 gal).
I am thinking about trying the horizons system that Leighton Morrison presented in the Shaping Fire podcast, so maybe the 100 liter bed will be done this way.
All of the beds have a sand filter in the bottom to prevent anaerobic conditions with the presence of organic fines.

For now the only seeds I had were from a giveaway that my friend @bebopweedfactory won and shared 10 seeds with me so I can reproduce them and make some more. 7 germinated and they are growing their first pair of leaves. I wont pollinate the whole plant, just a branch of each with a mix of the male’s pollen so we can make more seeds and keep the genetics. It is a Wolfpack by Bodhi. Other stuff is on its way and I will post and tag the sender here. Whatever arrives will be pop imediately, probably 3 of each so I can secure at least one female. I want to run 6 different strains if possible but that will depend on the space avaliable and the limit of 12 females total.
I will post some pictures of it all.

Hey man I just found out the pack came from your giveaway, so I wanna thank you for that, amazing seeds, I hope they like the soil and climate as well. Thanks for the generosity.

Thanks for following. Disaster sometimes strikes, gotta keep your head up, count on the solidarity of friends and community and just go on. I hope you enjoy the ride here.

Thanks man, I appreciate it!

Thanks bro! I really like it here, I hope the plants do too. It is a really biodiverse environment, having access to it has an immense potential for the garden, we can find really good microorganisms and cover crops. And also its really enjoyable.

Sure I will, glad to see the Brazilian community getting bigger… Pirata|nullxnull

Having such a biodiverse, intact ecosystem so close by seems like the perfect place to practice KNF or a similar method of organic natural farming.

Your slice of heaven on earth.

Yes that’s how I feel about it too. I have been collecting IMO there in different spots and they always come out amazing. The density of microorganism species in a gram of tropical forest soil is something insane. I try to collect them without disturbing the place but sometimes I cant resist a branch full of mycelium lol.

It sure is man, thanks for stopping by!

I’ve been researching a lot about KNF but I’m yet to put any of it into practice. I want to start experimenting with it this year. I’ve been managing an organic farm and its a ton of work. I think the more closely we can mimic nature and natural ecosystems the better it will be for reducing weed and insect pressure.

I’ve played with it for a while during the pandemics. It is really nice and easy to understand. The thing is that since it was created for the Korean reality, not all of it makes sense in a tropical environment, so I use it what makes sense. The IMO collections are really interesting, OHN is a nice tool and LABs is another great tool too.

Agree 100%. That’s how I think too. Amazing that you manage an organic farm. I would love to know more about it.

What would you like to know? Im happy to share. I’m actually getting out of farm management but would like to implement the things I have learned on my own projects.

It is easier to test stuff in our own projects for sure. I would like to know how big was it, how many people working there, what kind of crops you grow and how is the market, if you sell to consumers or to business. And also where is it.
