The Canadian Contingent (Part 1)

When I was a kid we just called it vacation  I remember being at Moon River with my father and pushing ice out of the way to swim. He would be standing there saying “this is the time you get, might as well use it, get in”. Looking back at those days part of me thinks it toughened me up. Another part can’t help but think man that sucked, lol.

Haven’t been to those Waterfalls though, I had a totally different picture in mind. I could handle those, :face_with_monocle: I think.

I stand in the Niagara River in as low as -15-20 to catch my elusive monster steelhead in December and z January NO MATTER how many layers or how many thousands your waders cost it’s still frrrrrzzzzing! But I’ve done it for 25 years, not gonna stop anytime soon. Polar Dip lol we do that for fun while ice fishing (always a HUGE HOLE drilled somewhere close by for the brave or stupid.)After a few “pops” someone always puts out the dare, and in the frigid Lake of Bays water we go, think my record was 21 minutes wearing only boxers.

Caught this female full of row ,christmas eve way back in 98 in Ontario . Winter steelhead fishing was much warmer on the west coast lol

Nowadays I love the winter because I realized I really enjoy back country touring on skis. It is amazing to me just how much people who grew up in Canada , complain about winter lol None of us complained as kids, we couldn’t get enough of it. Skiing makes me feel like that again. Especially when with kids.

Nice! That’s a big girl bro! Nothing like our steelies out here, next to everything cannabis that’s my other obsession. It’s SO TRUE almost everyone bitches when it snows or gets cold…… like you live in Ontario ffs! :man_facepalming:t2: I’d say she’s over 10 for sure.

I’m mostly a small creek native trout fisherman, but still manage some good fish. I’m never really interested in fishing when the Steelhead are running up the tributaries of Lake Ontario. When they’re running or the salmon are running, the rivers are just shoulder to shoulder with shitty anglers snagging fish and for me, that’s just not a nice day out on the water. I fish partially to clear my mind and have some space from people and the pace of the city, and steelie season just brings everyone around and seems to bring out the worst in anglers. Would sure love to catch one of those big mamas though. On my ultralight gear I’m sure it would be one helluva (probably losing) fight.

That’s cause we didn’t have to deal with rush hour I am guessing

As someone who grew up fishing salmon in Nova Scotia , I have to say nothing touches a fresh atlantic salmon on the fly. Best fighting fish I have caught on the fly rod from the east coast to west. Musky are about the only thing I haven’t caught.
I can’t remember what it weighed but I do remember I got just shy of 6 pounds of roe out of it. One of the few fish I actually kept over the years.

Because of where I live I still don’t :stuck_out_tongue:

Another East Coaster! I grew up in NB but spent most of my young adulthood in NS. Such a different pace from Ontario, and damn good fishing. Brookies, Salmon and Stripers everywhere!

The fishing is all dead here now other then for stripers and farm escapee rainbow trout. The river I caught my first salmon on has nothing but smallmouth bass now. No trout or salmon. It is pathetic what has been allowed to happen here.
I put my fly rod down 6 years ago after fishing my whole life. It was how I always recharged my soul and things we so dead here when I came home that it just hurt my soul.

Still plenty of trout and salmon to be had in NB. I go back east (well, pre-covid) every spring to fish specifically for Brookies. If you’re looking for some areas to fish that hold em, don’t hesitate to DM me!

I do hear you though, lots of waterways warming up and predatory fish like SMB and Chain Pickerel are moving into the area. Been happening slowly but surely since I was young. I know some of my old honey holes are like you described and now mainly bass areas, but I’ve found some new, excellent ones in recent years. Happy to share if you ever want to dust off the fly rod for some big Brook trout, or potentially even a salmon.

Hint: The Saint John area is a real hidden gem for trout fishing. So are the small creeks that feed into the Miramichi, though the ‘Chi itself is primarily full of stripers now. If you want more specifics, let me know via DM

I fly fish and Spey as well and true that, nothing like those 6-7 ft leaps of an Atlantic! Absolutely breathtaking and if you don’t know what you’re doing, one head shake mid air and here comes the barbless hook lol. Right at your head
