The Central American landrace and heirloom thread (Part 1)

a picture showing the last Panama male to sex. Then a picture of my favorite Panama male. Finally a group shot of the five Panama ladies. So five boys and five girls for Panama. Five boys and four girls for Oaxaca.

I wonder if you will see any of the pink flowers in these. I did in the Cannabiogen Panama I ran.

I ran this one on 12/12 from seed.

The plants are still under 220 watts of high output fluorescents… I will be putting them under 430 watt hps soon… unless someone talks me out of it… my other option is a thousand watts of metal halide. I have heard sativas stretch a lot more under HPS than they do metal halide. Anybody see this firsthand?

Nope, I had just transitioned them into smart pots. 3-4 weeks prior to the pic. Based on what you and @Upstate are saying, I probably got sent the wrong seeds or someone is lying about their genetics. It’s unfortunate either way. I chopped the ones that started flowering and kept the ones that weren’t just to see what I come out with. If this is an auto cross, it’s def not stable

Blue light breaks down auxins, keeping plants internodes tight. Sometimes too tight.
And red light increases cell expansion, along with the far reds which is effectively just a heat lamp, causing the plant to grow larger to help speed up transpiration and keep temperature in check.

Biggest leaves you’ll ever see indoors will be HPS grown, and if you go to the opposite end with a CMH you’ll get these tiny little baby leaves all over.

Hopefully there’s some pure red hair in there for you. Maybe some Autoflower pollen got away from the guy. Fingers crossed.

Sounds like you probably want to mix up the two spectrums then… my 430 watt is actually a 400w HPS and 30 watt metal halide. I don’t know how it does that exactly. The thousand watt is switchable between metal halide or HPS. I’ve heard the quality of buds are better with metal halide, although the yield is lower what do you think about that?

That seems to be the consensus. There was an article, I think in maximum yield, that said red lights cause the terpenes to volatilize, and the switch to blue lights at the end of flower increases essential oil content in the trichomes. Blue light also tends to bring out colors, more than red.

I would expect the yield to be lower, watt for watt, because HPS puts out like 30% more light than an MH. I think when you use equivalent PPF of red light vs blue light, the extra yield claim has been debunked. (If I don’t come back with a source for that claim, you should take it with a grain of salt, though.)

It will definitely produce morphological differences though. Put two clones, one under HPS and one under MH and you’ll end up with two different end products. Might not even pass as the same bud. Lol

I had a Hoabac (pure Viet ) preflowering in Juli or Juni Outside, cant remeber, but very early.

normally it starts flowering in mid August.

So, i waited and they just stopped flowering after few hairs, wich died off, and it started flowering normally in August again.

I also thought it might been Rootbound, or poor Soil, since my whole Growspot withered at end of the Season in a strange Way. Also i had a Tree giving a bit Shade

I just read lately that old Mexican flowered DOWN to 13 Weeks, or 12 Weeks? i recall. So, could be very similar Genetics probably?
Who knows what it really is.

Could be related, you never know. I have heard they resemble Nepalese varieties( vietnamese do too according to some), but I have nothing to compare it to personally. It seems to be a very different genepool from the rest of the western hemisphere. No proof. They just feel old to me. Gnarly. Yes, they can be fast flowering. My old books mention this trait. Didn’t give a flowering time, just said they can be done at the end of October( the early ones) in northern hemisphere, which would be roughly 12 weeks flowering.

Yes, i was fascinated to see preflowers on my Hoabac so early, yes i was fascinated to see Zamal flowering during Summer.
I couldnt trow it into the Mythos basket. I never found clear Evidence to tell whether its this or that.

We also seemed to have dicovered rather lately that hermies are often caused by unnative Growenviroment, and hermieprone Thai wouldnt really hermie in its Homecountry. So, these coud be stressinduced preflowers ? Thats what i thought in his Case.

Thats a beauty. How did it smoke?

I recall I gave some to a friend who jarred it for a year. After a year, he pulled it out and said remember this. It was possibly the smoothest, full flavour, cerebral-gasm smoke I think I’ve had. The one female from a ten pack - not the first time that’s happened to me, I have to say. It had this sort of summer berry mixed with box fresh plastic electrical appliances packaging. It was really special. I would run them again although I know Ace do work their lines to improve them annually. They were 2016 packs so I’m sure they worked to streamline it since. Anyway, it was one of those smokes that makes you feel healthy or whole - hard to communicate the feeling. I really wish I still had it. It got you very high but still able to work. Motivational and good for creativity. Also funnily enough, didn’t keep me awake if I needed to sleep.

Man, I wish I had that experience with Panama! I grew Ace Panama in 2018 and didn’t enjoy any of the plants. None of them were cerebral even after a long cure. The flavor on one of them was very good however. Still rather boring High. The flowering times have dropped to around 9 weeks. Personally I don’t believe you can improve a sativa once it gets down to 12 weeks. After that you’re making an" indica" ,breeding towards whatever Indica contaminated the line to give it such a quick flowering time. It’s very difficult to keep sativa traits going once you get such fast flowering times. It is possible though. Nice to know you had such a pleasant experience with their Panama. It seems like people that got their seeds a couple years before me are finding plants like the one you are talking about. I didn’t have the luck. If you want to give their 2018 version a try I have some seeds.

Funny you say that as I take the last few puffs of some Ace Panama That is still at 55ru in a gallon zip, all mids for a press bud run. I really didn’t care much for it at first, now it’s taken on a strawberry lemonade taste and is a good day smoke…:metal::sunglasses:

Aw bless. That’s a very kind offer. I know I lucked out with the one I had and I agree Ace work some of the special out of their lines occasionally The Panama I had took a year long cure for me to realise it was special and cneeded that length of cure - most aren’t that patient. It kind of comes with the territory of trying to release something new every year. “We crossed this to this and now we have this” doesn’t necessarily make it better. I asked Dubi why they didn’t continue their Guatemala line and he said that they needed to sty ahead in the market and felt that’s what they needed to do. I don’t need to try it again tbh. I still have early release half packs of their Guatemala and Honduras. I don’t know if I’ll ever get a chance to grow them out.

Deffo needs a good long cure to be fully appreciated. You do get that holy smoke, woah, this shit is really rather good.

The last of my panama buds are from 2018. Loooong cure. Still boring. One looked fantastic, and I know it will make nice babies, but it was not my cup of tea. I had read that Panama has energetic Phenos but I found none of that. I know its in there to be found, but I dont generally grow something twice if I didn’t like it the first time. Probably takes being hybridized to release the magic again with this one.
It’s too bad looks are usually more important than effects in the industry. For me, the opposite is true. Effects first.
Since I badmouthed their Panama, I better talk up Ace Purple Malawi again lol. Excellent high, plenty strong enough, dark Purple color and excellent taste after a long cure. Potency was good with just a short cure. All 4 plants were good or great.
