The Dwarf of Damascus

I took this picture a few days ago. I’ve been too busy to do anything with them yet. Hopefully I’ll have the time to get them into my hydro starter system. I’ll have to wash the coco out of the roots.

I’m not as certain any which of these are dwarfs as I’d hoped I would be. I need to grow them a bit more before I think it’s going to be apparent.

I did manage to get my tomatoes potted this weekend. There’s hopefully some micros and dwarfs in there. Should be a lot of variation in these F2’s, so I’m looking for a good selection for the line.

Tomatoes. That is right good sir, you heard me correctly.

What is that you say? You hope I won’t be using this DS-60 and Son-T-Agro 250w HPS with a digital ballast for growing dank and hairy buds?

Oh no sir, I would never do that. They are for my Tomatoes, honest officer!

LOL.

I don’t know what to say. You have really knocked it out of the park here on several levels. For some reason this has brought a tear of joy to my eye. In a world so messed up as we all now live in, I can see a ray of hope.

Thankyou for sharing.

More Tomatoes please! (I need some photos to send to my probation officer who I promised I wouldn’t grow any more dank and hairy buds)

:joy: well I’m glad you stopped by. I’ve got plenty more tomato action in the next couple months. They’re all just babies now, but the fun is about to get started.

I’m real excited about these…Very cool plants IMHO.

So what does your process look like for breeding these? Are you just selecting all minis and then crossing them? I think this is about all you can do with these until you lock down the dwarf trait. Ya know 20-30 yrs ago autos had no strength…

I would like to help you on these if that is ok with you…not sure how you are going about breeding them, but my resources and time are at your disposal with these plants…

Edit: it might be prudent and a time save to cross once you find a reasonable number of plants. Then select for dwarf…but you said the high was great already so that might not be necessary.

I know some of you are going to be horrified by this.

These seem like potential candidates. I kept the runt of Damascus as well. Seemed like the right thing to do.

Res is at 1.1ec because I accidentally put too much water in. I’ll need to bump it up pretty soon,

I think some of these tomatoes are micros. I have about 5 more that are definitely micros.

The Syrian/leb starts got hungry and I was a like slow to bump them up to 1.5ec. They’ll live, though a few might dump a couple leaves. One is definitely a runt. I’m curious to see if I can run them to finish in the little ass treepots. I might go for it…

On another note, I should mention that the one that started flowering on me is still alive. I boosted the light cycle up to 20/4 and I think that has stopped it. That’s good news for me. I like that these will initiate flowering early in the summer, but would probably prefer that they weren’t auto flowering.

I didn’t get to grow any tomatoes this year, seeing these pics is really helping scratch the itch, lol.

 You think the auto flowering could be linked with dwarfism?

Well my conclusion right now is that they aren’t auto flowering, but rather what some European breeders have called “semi-autoflowering”. It’s a trait that is commonly found in Mediterranean strains like this one. Basically it means that flowering will occur at some threshold above 12 hours (usually around 14-15 hours). So when you grow them outside, they will initiate flowering much sooner in the season and finish much earlier.

It’s a useful trait for northern latitudes, although I haven’t tried them outdoors. My only concern is that if I were to start them too soon, they might flower before heading into solstice.

Yes I saw you mention it earlier, and also in the Lebathon. I’ve been doing a ton of digging and research into these early type varieties because of how useful they can be up north here. If they start flowering in July the plants can get the bulk of budding done in the prime summer months, instead of photos which don’t really start until mid-late August when the weather isn’t really optimal for good flowering anyway.

That’s my thought too. It’s gotta be better for budding in the late summer sun rather than the fall.

Things are starting to pick back up with the nute bump. I see a nice sqanchy :seedling:

They look very healthy and very teeny tiny.

Here’s the crew — good progress this week. I might have to remove a few to the composter.

I’ve decided to do something risky and attempt to grow them full term in tree pots. I have no idea if this will work, but I aim to find out.

They have only 2in diameter by 7” depth for their roots. There is some holes out the bottom they can use, but it will be limited. On my janky little timer, I can only set 3 cycles. I think they will have to become long cycles… maybe an hour even.

I set the lights down to 14/10. I expect to see some start flowering soon. I should ramp up the ec a bit in preparation, or possibly mix a new res by next week.

Those tomatoes will get a contract high. The clones held up good. I mean they are strong looking.

I’m running out of room. Someone might have to die soon. It’ll be like Clue

That Jaune Flamme is one viney ass tomato. It’s insane to grow indoors. This dwarf trait is gonna be perfect. The number of growth nodes is crazy, so it should be short and bushy.

I might have a taker for some plants. Hoping @8k_feet will grab some in the next day or two. I have 3 males and I think all the rest are females. The males are slightly taller than the rest, but aren’t huge. I’ll use em.

Gets tricky from here. They’re all root bound now. I’m gonna ramp nutes a bit tomorrow. Probably I’ll target 1.8 in a high P formula for the next few weeks and then drop it after bud set.

Tomatoes are flowering quite a bit now and there’s some fruit setting. I use an electric toothbrush to pollinate them.

The count is in. By picking small plants at the early stage, I ended up with 15 females and 3 males. The males are 3 of the tallest and one of the females was tall and did not have the dwarf structure. So my dwarf selection wasn’t perfect.

Overall, I think this ratio is strongly suggestive that the trait is sex linked. Also, it’s a nice way to have a regular line and get highly female ratios.
