The "Freaky Bastard" (f1) Experiment with Marola

Yep… Think I fucked up.

I lost my shit, went ham and dropped the jar I was collecting of these freaky bastards to soak… this morning it looks like two more of the first testers popped up in the little 2" pots… one of them had dropped; but now I am potentially looking at like 30+ F1s to sift through & cull from… germination rates might not be as low as I thought, but one of these original DBf3s was apparently very feral natured and looking to escape (for those who are not familiar with the history of plant breeding - we humans bred plants to demonstrate most of the predictable behaviors like germination that we see in our crops, whereas in nature diversity is king and the unpredictable nature of nature lends itself to keeping it that way. As such, having irregular germination times helps ensure more sprouts will pop up to engage in some good ol plant fucking throughout the season)…

I didn’t drop all of the seeds… but I dropped most of the ones I had left… so I culled all the (FSf8) volunteers and am setting up a tray to put these in…

Don’t hate me OG; but I won’t be keeping to many backups it seems.

For good measure I also dropped 10x of the Russian Rocket Fuel (NPR) 1x FogDog and 1x random freebie of Plastered (Brickhouse x 9lb Hammer) JP had sent me a few years back… still that’s not relevant to this… so anyways, there will be DBxFS F2s… and we’ll see what I do with all these f1s… maybe flip them extra early… oh my OG, what have I done?

PS if you are wondering - from what I can see (and as was expected) there’s nothing freaky about any of these little bastards (yet)

Pictured are the original seed carriers (“Angel” a Freakshow f7 in the back, “Penelope” the Drunken Bastard f4 in the middle, and “GiGi” [my Gator Girl] another Freakshow f7 in front) in reveg and 3 of the first four F1s to say hello.

You’re so right @Hemp. I totally agree with you and generally like to do so myself as well.

Still, I could really be much better at it (and hope to be in the future).

For now, I am making due with what I’ve got thus far; but we’re working on it - trust that, OG.

I think I got some Freak show seeds.
@TestOfOath . I haven’t seen him around in a minute.

From me? Its possible if that’s what you mean.

Luckily they launched Hi Elevation Genetics and since it’s the backbone to the family brand & there are several people helping to maintain the line in pure form; not to mention - everyone and their mothers outcrossing with it, I don’t think we will see a shortage of the FS at this point.

I will also be keeping a bit of FStP2 seed from this last run and already put a few in several hands; but the selected cuts went strait into 12/12 to “get her done” and DBf4 didn’t really get a chance to fill out like the Freakshow’s so I don’t even think I will have seen 100 seeds from her.

Penelope (DBf4) is still around; but that is the last of my DB (until & unless I can restock with 7 East) so unless I got lucky on my selection of pairing (and can work out the germination issue down the line) I will simply move on.

With ABC more widely available, both in pure form and hybrids, I feel like the Drunken Bastard doesn’t stand out so much as a breeding candidate.

I actually enjoyed growing it over the past few years; but yield, vigor and flower time are really lacking and while the colors, nose and esthetic all made up for it as an ornamental or stealth plant, it’s not like these aren’t traits we can just as easily pull from another line that doesn’t bring the set of weaknesses DB presents.
Still, when I show people a Freakshow plant they say “that’s different”, when I show them a Bastard they say “That’s not it!” lol

Stealth-wise, ABCs just shits on the Freakshow.

I’ve given people cuts that they’ve grown out, smoked, and then still asked if it wasn’t just some other plant that makes weed, too.

Hopefully, I will get to check out some of Bin’s gear in the future.

NOTE I do not offer Freakshow seeds on here like that because I’d rather people buy from and support the breeder & family.

I got some from test of oath. It’s been several years ago. I’m funny about my seed collection. I hate spending my money on seeds that don’t pop. I do save a few of every package so I can reproduce something.

Seems the website is being maintained. Maybe I’ll reach out and say hi, let them know they are missed here on OG.

Anyways, OG @Hemp - Thanks for being the best part of OG and helping to make this platform such an awesome place for the community. I appreciate you, man.

Makes sense. Nothing funny about it.

I have been upset because I have had a few issues with some. I do try and get them on sale. Some pop like popcorn. Just looking at them they want to bust a tail. lol

I had a cross of ABC X Freakshow that I had taken to an F3 and then crossed a Duckweb IBL with it. I had 25 seeds from that last cross. I tried to germinate all of them and many popped but then stalled and died. I think the ABC is just too unreliable.

Don’t we all? lol

It’s the nature of these things tho. Buying seed can be like buying a lotto ticket sometimes, except I’ve personally had more luck with seeds.

I know a few people who actually have a really hard time with seeds, tho, and will almost certainly kill them if they are not out the husk in 24hours… so it’s a thing.

Definitely a thing with these…

You think it’s the ABC in general or just some of the lines going around? I actually sourced some site 4s that seem to be showing some promise, and see several ongoing ABC projects in the community.

Personally I think the ABC genetics make for a week plant and poor germination in general. Im sure some growers have aquired some skill for growing them but I dont think these genetics are appropriate for most gardeners. I have decided to step back from any further experimentation with ABC.

That’s to bad on the seeds.

I agree 100%. My friend here he grows I give plants all the time. I did that a lot a few years ago. Couldn’t get my containers back. lol My favorite is the 3 gallon size. I do believe some are 2.5.

Yeah… My father always said it is better to gift & give unto those you care for than loan something just to loose a friend.

I get it. I hate it when I loose seedlings. Shit hurts. I haven’t inoculated these and so I hope they don’t decide they are a sensitive bunch.

Like I said - one already dropped (D.O.) and I am running living soil; but starting in coco this time… I might fill some cells with the soil to see if there is a difference in development between the two.

If you want to make germination easier. I have found that using a piece of fine sand paper will help. I use P320 fine sandpaper. I fold the sandpaper so there is an edge like a blade. Than I sand the edges of each seed, where the seems are with the blade edge. I use a loupe / magnifying glass to find the seems and inspect my sanding work. You have to be careful not to sand too far. Doing this I have seen most of the seeds crack in a day or less. It gives the seedlings a little help and mutants seem to need that help, saving any extra energy for growing insted of cracking through there thick shells.
