The smell of burning plastic in the morning …

No, not some new glue strain, it’s my ACInfinity controllable outlet.

Yes, I had an extension cord plugged into it, which I know is not good. It was running a 100w ceramic heater. The cord prongs are now fused into the outlet …. Edit to add the heater still works fine so it wasn’t an issue with that end of the chain.

I’m not casting stones at the manufacturer, just a reminder to everyone that there’s a fair degree of fire risk in what we are doing, be safe.

100w did that? That’s seriously fucked, even with the extension cord.

Then again I just had a vape do something similar and it’s only kicking 5v

Also I had an aftermarket speed controller on an old fan that I would always give the stink eye for just this reason. But it was fine.

Happened to me with a 24/7 Chinese oscillating fan :fire:, scary as f#ck, I was lucky the whole tent wasn’t burnt, glad no injuries on your side … beer3|nullxnull

I won’t have an oscillating fan in my grow. Too many horror stories.

Damn! Good thing you were home!

How old was the plug? Please update us with their response :+1:

I just have now an expensive one with stand, programmed to work 15 minutes and stop 10 times a day with a smart WiFi plug, too much humidity here …

There’s one particular fan that I stand by and would recommend. I have several of them.

One of them ran 24/7 for 4 years and then died. No melting no problems just dead.

I’d been using it about 12-18 mos.
I’m not going to reach out to ACI, I know in advance what their response will be - “It’s not rated for use with extension cords”.

Fair enough.

I’d still contact them. If you were overloading it that’s one thing but 100w, c’mon.

There are some things you just never use extension cords for. And one of them is heaters.

Bad LED wiring caused a fire in my grow room years ago.

It’s not supposed to do that under single fault conditions…
I’m not seeing any agency markings on that label, do you see any elsewhere on the cube? (UL/CSA, TUV etc)

How does the extension cord do that?

Last winter my heat went out so I was running an electric radiator. I hooked it up to an extension cord and noticed the cord got VERY HOT so I stopped doing that.

But why? I dont want burn my house down.

The potential issue with extension cords is the wire gauge and the load current. A 100W heater is less than an amp load so that should be a non issue.

What else was running on the extension cord?

That could have turned out much worse, good catch.

Nothing else running off that outlet other than the heater. The heater is a 250w but I had it running on 100 w mode. No fuses blew, that’s what’s a bit scary.

Between you and me and the internet, I did not show this to my wife. It would not be good …

Do you see any UL TUV markings anywhere on it?
