Now on a serious note. Does anybody know how much money could be made from seed sales over a 5 year period ? I have only heard one guy ( d j Short ) say anything about what he made from seeds. Is there a website that has information about that sort of thing? Anybody ?

AI is usually good for these kind of things.

The profitability of selling cannabis genetics seeds over a five-year period is highly variable and depends on numerous factors, making it impossible to provide a specific monetary figure. However, based on the available information, we can analyze the potential and the key elements that would influence revenue and profit.

Market Overview and Growth Potential:

  • The global cannabis seeds market is experiencing significant growth due to increasing legalization and acceptance of cannabis for medical and recreational purposes.
  • Market size estimates vary across reports, but all indicate substantial expansion. For instance:
    • One report estimated the global market at $1.22 billion in 2023, projecting it to reach $6.5 billion by 2035 with a CAGR of 14.94% (2025-2035).
    • Another report valued the market at $1.3 billion in 2021 and expects it to reach $6.5 billion by 2031, with a CAGR of 18.4% (2022-2031).
    • A third source placed the 2023 market size at $404.62 million, forecasting it to reach $1.21 billion by 2031 with a CAGR of 14.7% (2024-2031).
    • Yet another report estimates a market size of $2.16 billion in 2024, growing to $8.32 billion by 2032 at a CAGR of 18.33% (2025-2032).
  • These figures suggest a robust and expanding market for cannabis seeds, indicating potential for significant revenue generation over the next five years.

Factors Influencing Profitability:

  • Genetics and Strain Quality: High-quality genetics and unique, desirable strains can command premium prices. Seeds of varieties with high cannabinoid content (THC or CBD), specific terpene profiles, or disease resistance are particularly valuable.
  • Seed Type: Feminized seeds, which guarantee female plants (the ones that produce flowers), are increasingly popular and can be sold at a higher price than regular seeds. Autoflowering seeds, known for their quicker growth cycle, also have a strong market.
  • Branding and Marketing: Building a strong brand with a reputation for reliable genetics is crucial. Effective marketing strategies, both online and potentially through local meetups or a simple website, can significantly impact sales.
  • Pricing Strategy: Cannabis seeds can range from $5 to $20 or more per seed for desirable genetics at the retail level. Wholesale prices are lower, but selling in bulk can still be profitable. Factors like strain rarity, seed quality, and packaging influence pricing.
  • Production Costs: The cost of producing high-quality seeds, including breeding, pollination, harvesting, and quality control, will affect the profit margin. Efficient production practices are essential.
  • Legal and Regulatory Landscape: Regulations regarding the sale and distribution of cannabis seeds vary significantly by jurisdiction. Compliance with local laws is paramount and can impact operational costs and market access.
  • Competition: The cannabis seed market is becoming increasingly competitive. Differentiation through unique genetics, excellent customer service, or strong branding is necessary to stand out.
  • Distribution Channels: Selling directly to consumers online, through specialty stores, or via wholesalers and distributors will influence the final revenue and profit margins.
  • Business Model: Different business models, such as focusing solely on seed production or integrating it with cultivation or retail operations, will have varying profitability levels.

Potential Revenue and Profit Considerations:

  • A well-pollinated cannabis plant can yield thousands of viable seeds. With prices ranging from a few dollars to over $20 per seed at the retail level, the potential gross revenue from a single successful breeding cycle can be substantial.
  • Profit margins for cannabis seed production can be significant if production costs are managed effectively and the genetics are in high demand. Some sources suggest potential profit margins ranging from 20% to 60% in the broader cannabis cultivation market, and seed production can be a lucrative addition.
  • Over a five-year period, consistent breeding of high-demand genetics, coupled with effective marketing and sales, could generate substantial revenue. However, this requires ongoing investment in breeding programs, quality control, and market outreach.
  • Starting with a low budget might necessitate focusing on online platforms or local meetups initially to minimize overhead costs associated with a physical store. Building trust and securing initial customers through positive reviews and word-of-mouth marketing will be crucial in the early stages.

In conclusion, while it’s impossible to provide a specific monetary figure for potential earnings over five years, the expanding cannabis seed market offers significant opportunities for profit. Success will depend on the quality of genetics, effective business strategies, compliance with regulations, and the ability to build a strong brand and customer base. A detailed business plan that considers these factors, including market analysis, competitive landscape, and financial projections, is essential for navigating this dynamic market and maximizing profitability.

Thanks @globalhead . DJ Short said that his deal with henk was $0.30 cents per seed. He said that he made about 60,000 euros in less than 5 years. I could retire comfortably on that. I realize that I’m just fantasizing but the possibility is there and it’s fun to think about. I would have to deal with a seed vendor. I could never run a business. I would rather go fishing.

On another note, I will need to rethink the name of my strain because it ain’t what I thought it was. Not entirely. I was looking at that resinous male and noticed that it was green. All the ones before it had a deep red ( almost purple ) color to the flowers and stem. So, after digging through my seed collection, I found my notes. After the initial cross of Cinderella 99 x Ghost Train Haze #1 , I later crossed it with a Frisian Duck. I remember now that because pot was still illegal I wanted something to plant among the giant ragweed because their leaves look like Ducksfoot. Anyway, I began seeing these resinous males that were making a few small female flowers and started breeding with them. (This quote from D J Short. )
“(A quick word on “backward” hermaphrodites ? declared males that eventually sport female flowers ? as opposed to the usual female-to-male hermaphrodites. These are semi-rare occurrences, usually sterile but sometimes viable, that I have found at times to be valuable in their genetic contributions. Some of the most resinous and desirable males I have encountered exhibited this trait. This trait almost seems to guarantee against unwanted hermaphroditism in subsequent generations as it also increases the female to male ratio in its progeny.)”

Sadly, I have lost the Ducksfoot leaf but gained the ability to throw these resinous males on a regular basis.
I really want to name this strain " My big ten inch" but I know Aerosmith would sue me.
