Ya if ya can get some mycelium to jump off into a sterilized grain and once become fully inoculated you could probably just pack the grain into drilled holes and seal with wax so no need for dowels in that case .

You’re fine like @Meesh said. Try to confine your pruning to minor, lower growth, & don’t bend or train as severely as you might in veg. The idea is to not induce a bunch of stress from here on out to harvest, lest it decide to 
your
