Yeah, we get algae often here. I think it would be ok though.
The set-up has to be extra sanitary. It’s most likely under low intensity lighting / relatively controlled temperatures. Everything gets autoclaved or somehow sanitized. Maybe it’s possible to pick-up algae off the plant matter? Though, that’s being sanitized to an extent too.
