Today we bend...not break

I think the it’s finally time to try and reign in the outdoor plants. They are getting a little too tall and bushy. Leading to overcrowding in the space they were allotted. Lesson learned for next season, after gender is revealed to strongly consider relocating plants and applying a trellis earlier in the season.

Here is the game plan for the day:

  • Transplant three male plants to pots
  • Install sturdy posts
  • Bend the remaining six girls to about half height, if possible, and work into an even trellis

Things to try and avoid:

  • Snapping the plants in half
  • Ladder accidents
  • Bad reactions to the heat & sun

This year’s initial gender breakdown:

F - M - M - M - F - F
F - M - F - M - F - M

After I removed (x) three unwanted males:
F - M - x - x - F - F
F - M - F - M - F - x

After today’s transplanting is complete hopefully this will be the new arial view of the garden [spots are in “()”]:
F(1) - :arrow_right: - (2) — (3) - (4) - :arrow_left: F(5) — F(6)
---------------- ------------------
F(7) - :arrow_right: - (8) - F(9) - (10) - :arrow_left: F(11) - (12)

5 hrs in, 10ish water pounds lighter, making some progress:

Realizing I made the post distance the near maximum cross length for the trellis netting. Hopefully this wasn’t a mistake, I really don’t want to have to go back to step 2…

Meant to post this last night, but the day ran away from me.

  • Bend the remaining six girls to about half height, if possible, and work into an even trellis :ballot_box_with_check:

All of the plants are now at half height. Which was the goal, and I can see some of the tops angling skyward.

But I’m a bit afraid to inspect my work 12hrs post. Time was not something I had a lot as I entered the final step (HST 6 plants into the trellis). So these ladies experienced a very rough training. Many stems were pinched, and a handful outright snapped in half.

The main stem of these plants are all now at a 90 degree angle. Just hope to see the main cola and offshoots angling up and not drooping. Same for the one main stem that I snapped in half.

Not as important, but inspiring, the three males appear to be enjoying their 5 gallon pots. They went from dropping to less so this morning. I think the sun will probably test them today but I think the transplants can be called a success. :crossed_fingers:

Plans for the week: Continue to weave out the branches and remove lower growth. And get back to feedings in a couple more days.

Happy Growing!
