Tools / Trades DIY Work Forums

Hey people,

I find myself coming here to post questions related to non-gardening, home-owner type diy stuff in the Homeowner DIY thread (DIY Home repairs). But I often feel like I’m either asking too much (of people willing to offer advice), or that I might need a dedicated spot to ask certain things - where everyone is discussing the activities and the tools and practices involved.

Anybody have any good suggestions for forums that might help?

Thanks.

Google and youtube seem to be where I find those answers

The problem is there is no back and forth on youtube or “google”.

I use my phone or trip to the store to get the parts needed from research. No back and forth, just done and move on to next problem… fast and efficient

Well, it’s not good enough for me. Looking for suggestions for other forums that would be more suited to these tops specifically. Maybe someone else will have a suggestion. I’ve got a few to look into. But I don’t want to join more, it’s enough already, hah.
*By back and forth, I mean communication.

Thank @Hashpants. Another experienced tradesman also offered assistance a couple weeks back. I’m going to have to take you guys up on it. I really like this place, OG has good people. So helpful.

I need to figure out when approach I’m going to take with this work - how much of it I can do, and of course which tools I “need” to buy.

Let me just say, I want to talk to some Makita users/lovers to ask about tools. I love “Tools & Stuff” channel on youtube (and his other channel). I’m on the Milwaukee platform. I just picked up two circular saws. I’m questioning if I want to dive deeper into Milwaukee, or have another brand platform as well (Makita, Dewalt, etc.), and Makita just seems different. But, that is for another thread I suppose…The OG Tools Thread (non gardening tools), haha.

Thanks guys.

You could add Porter-Cable to that tool group.

Milwaukee is US and a 5 year warranty. I usually buy Milwaukee.

Porter-Cable tools are fine but their batteries are shit. At least the 4 i have are. They’re only 4 years old but they don’t hold a charge for even a half hour of use anymore.

I have one of the little Porter-Cable 12 volt battery drills. It still works fine bought in 2012. Same battery. I don’t use it everyday anymore tho and haven’t in a decade.

If you need to know anything about cooking holler at me. I’ve been a professional chef in the trade for 25 years. I like to talk to humans as well when looking for info. Google is great but so is bouncing ideas off of other humans.
I like knives, those are my tools mostly lol

i’m old school and recommend staying away from batteries. just getting back into contracting and maybe it’s just my opinion but they seem to be built better. porter cable, milwaukee, dewalt, bosch (do they still make saws?) all good brands.

Bosch makes good stuff.

But I never really had a house brand it was all cobbled together from kijiji.

Stanley Black & Decker makes Porter Cable, DeWalt, Black & Decker and Craftsman power tools. I have my Grandfathers old Thor drill. Still works like a champ. When I need tools, I hit the flea market, especially if I want wrenches, you can get 'em for a buck or so, same with sockets and such.

Owning a home is a pain in the ass. Luckily I’m a pretty decent carpenter, drywaller, painter etc. I can do basic wiring and plumbing, and over the years have accumulated tools for most projects. We just did vinyl plank flooring, and are in the process of redoing the kitchen. Going with Butcher Block counter tops. Cabinets are original solid wood and except for a couple wacky drawers are in excellent shape.

I’m not looking forward to the bathroom. Tub has to go, that means the tile as well. Not a fan of tile work. Looking at options, but gotta finish the kitchen first.

Most people use Dewalt still.

If you’re low on money, buy the harbor freight version to get yourself the first job that will give you some money to buy real equipment because harbor freight stuff is built to last, for a few jobs.

Also this is really useful

theres a pretty big diy forum and a home improvement reddit
