Just a quick question because I’ve never kept a mother alive for an extended period of time before.
I have a mother growing in a small pot, and it stopped growing a couple months ago due to being root bound.
Overall, it’s fairly healthy, but it did get a little light burned on the foliage of the top 2-3 nodes.
What would happen if I “mega-topped” this plant, and removed say, 3 nodes worth in one snip? Will the lack of space for root expansion prevent new growth like currently? Is it just a bad idea in general? Thoughts? Thanks!
There’s a few tutorials on keeping mothers on Overgrow so I won’t go into any depth.
If you want to keep them in the same sized pot, pull them out, trim the roots, cut 1/2" (1cm) off the bottom and sides and repot with some new soil.
If you turn your lights down to 1,200~1,500 lux and they will almost go into stasis, you can keep them that way for months. Dial the light up to about 2,500 lux and they start growing again.
When you are taking slips to clone, always leave a node.
My mothers always end up looking like Edward Scissorhands got drunk and overly excited…
Eventually I trim them up and plant them outside when I’m done with them.
You could always take a few clones of the mother plant and start her from scratch as well.
I top my mother plants all the time and have had no issues.
Good luck and happy growing.
Technically, this plant is a “father”, my best male I wanted to keep alive until I was ready to let it blow its load. And, it’s completely apical, with not really any lateral branching, so I could only really take one cutting, which would be the top where it’s pretty light burned.
I would top that bad boy right at the same level as the other plant right next to it so your canopy is nice and even and replant the top that you chop.
