Utility Pants for Men (In Canada)

I’ve been wanting and needing pants for a year or two, easily. Well, here’s my thread asking for helpful suggestions.

“Utility” in the sense of pants being clothing first, and a “tool” second. A tool for carrying things temporarily or for extended periods (like for work). I’m not looking for fashion advice.

Utilitarian is the key word. EDIT: I’m trying to not wear a bag/backpack.

-Pockets (Numerous and well thought out)
-Belt loops (Large enough for a proper wide/thick width belt)
-Fasteners (I don’t want Velcro if avoidable)
-Durable ('Nuff said. I crouch, straddle, stretch, kneel, etc.)
-Comfortable (Stretch fabric is a bonus, gussets - like crotch gussets are welcome)
-Affordable

Brands, that I can remember, I’ve considered:

-Carhartt
-Wrangler (eg: riggs workwear)
-Helicon-tex
-Proper (had previously, not great)

I’m pretty partial to “Cargo” style pants. I need the pockets. I think most men have at least three real everyday carry items; wallet, keys, phone. That’s a minimum. Well I’m not putting my phone in the same pocket as my keys. I also don’t want anything (eg: phone, keys) in a pocket where they’ll just be slapping my leg or something all day, and making noise. And what if you also have with you; a small snack, some other object/tool (chill), medication (epi-pen? inhaler?), cigs/joints/vape, glasses, earbuds, etc.

I live in Canada (always have to point out that limiting factor).
is $100 (CAD. Or USD equivalent is probably $50-75) high or low to expect to pay.
I have one pair of pants left right now, and they’re too big. I hate them, haha.
I’m not a big guy. It seems my sizes in shoes and pants are always the most popular, which should actually mean there’s more of them, and there’s no …“rarity pricing”. It usually just means they’re sold out, or don’t go on sale (because they’ll sell without the sale).

I don’t think this thread is too silly. I searched “pants” and found @DougDawson’s thread on “what’s in your pants?” (pocket knife related, mostly, I think). So this thread can be “what pants is your knife on?”.

(what pants are your knife on? no. what pant is your…knife on? I duno.)

Can you get Duluth pants in Canada? Check them out.

I hit up goodwill for work pants. I also like the giant tiger cargo work pants. Only 30 $ a pair and last for a good bit.

Duluth, that’s another I’ve heard of. Probably a no go for Canada (from memory). I should probably put “Canada” in the title…

I even went to walk around Old Navy a while back. I heard they had decent, cheap cargo pants. They had nothing.

If I can’t get it online, I probably can’t get it.
Thrift stores are going to likely be a waste of time around here. I went to winners also, when I checked Old Navy. Winners was a total waste of time as well. I used to buy boxers there.

@Reznfingeez33 If I’m able to check a thrift store I will.

This may not help you, and I think the quality is not what it used to be, and it’s more expensive than your budget, but I bought a pair of utility pants from lululemon 25 years ago. I wear them all the time, they’ve got a few secret pockets for stashing things.

All the time. Still in great shape.

carharts are pretty hard to beat.
I wear them doing hobby steel fabrication/welding, wrenching on my vehicles and toys, cutting firewood, gardening and yard maintenance.
I have regular ones and insulated ones… both pants and bibbs.
I have a wrangler insulated jacket that I wear in colder months working in my shop and other activities where I might be using tools or laying on the ground. I like the fit of the wrangler jacket over the carhart for some reason.

I have not bought any clothes since I was in high school ( that was a long damn time ago). I wear old used clothes that people give me. Any and all. Right now Im wearing a pair of pants that are 4 sizes too big and would fall down if I did not have a belt. I say " live like a bum. Its cheaper".
 :+1:

I was looking for some cheaper pants for hiking, camping, yardwork, and whatnot. These CQR pants have been great for me. They’re on Amazon Canada.

I went through the too big/baggy faze. It drives me nuts now. I don’t like oversized clothes. I also don’t like “skinny” jeans. I want clothes to fit properly and allow movement.
I like your style though.

@Nitt I cannot express how awesome this place is. Worth the drive if you’re close:

They are in Oshawa or have flat rate shipping at $9.99 Canada wide.

Also here is another place I go too. I’ve worn cargos since the 90’s and will so regardless of the Dad jokes.

The jokes end when I unpack like it was disarming Germany after the war and everything on me is frustratingly useful to the person that initially teased me.

That’s all USA. Canada is “Packages shipping to Canada will be shipped within 10 business days. Duties, taxes, and other handling charges are the responsibility of the purchaser.” But I might have a look.

Yea, ok. Pretty hard to find alternatives, too. Haha. I ordered a pair earlier today. I missed one day shipping or I would’ve bought three or four and tried sizes etc. When they go on sale, they don’t have my size or a color I want. Annoying.

Oh yea, that’s another one I’ve known about forever. I forgot though. Ok, thanks.

That’s one reason the search is difficult, I think. Because I want cargo pockets. Thanks man.

I might have seen those. I’ll check’em out. Thanks.
There are many “brands” on amazon with random arrangements of consonants and vowels as their name. It’s hard to even take a chance on any of them.

Thanks man. They’re in my bookmarks actually. I wouldn’t have thought to look there, though. Good call.

Bahahaha. Absolutely. I’ll check out that link, too. Thanks again. I’d throw some stale breadcrumbs for you if I could.

Edit: I heard “Ariat” brand mentioned and am looking into them as well.

I have a few pairs of those thick fire hose pants they sell as well as a few of the lighter stretchy kind and I love them. The heavy fire hose pants are a bit thick for summer but you can kneel in a sticker patch and never know it. The stretchy ones are probably the most comfortable pants I’ve ever owned, highly recommend.

Cabela’s or Duluth Trading Co make decent cargo pants with lots of pockets. Cabela’s specializes in hunting/fishing gear

The duluth firehose cargo pants are really nice. Good material, and super waterproof. Good pockets too.

Used to wear mainly 5.11 taclite pro’s but the top pockets tend to dump their some of their contents when youre sitting too far back or laying on your back(like loose change or dab pens). Good pant though. Also super waterproof and one of the more durable pants ive tried probably more durable than duluth. (Will say i haven’t bought any in a few years so can’t speak on current quality, but worth investigating)

If you are near to either of the placed I mentioned go in if you can. I’ve found on site sale items and ended up getting more than I came for with less money spent then I had budgeted for based on what they show online.

Both places. Cause TBH if it’s cheap why bother doing the online sales back-end labour?
