Only on OG can you get your teeth into a discussion without having to wade through oceans of egos and big swinging dicks, imho it’s awesome.
In small isolated populations within stable environments, inbreeding becomes unavoidable, and so evolutionary processes result in an additional response: genetic purging of deleterious recessives alleles through natural selection. If you define
genetic fitness in the standard way as the capacity of an organism to successfully pass on its genes then the law of the jungle filters out the weak through natural attrition.
Often there is a rebound to stability effect on vigour and fitness so that like with Coyotes the organism becomes supremely adapted and hyper specialised to the habitat and environment in which it has evolved. Some organisms evolve in widely variable habitats and so evolve as highly specialised at being adaptable… they are specialised generalists, domestic cats for example, cannabis is another example really.
Highly inbred may be something that plant breeders want but in general it’s not what natural selection does except in extremely marginal environments.
A couple of update pics on my Viet Black. These are 4th generation selected and inbred, I was looking to select for a shorter stature more branches and of course more frosty.
I pollinated with this male from some local weed was originally png gold, this is 3 generations down the line, way more trichomes… still very slow to flower though.
Oh dude, that’s awesome. If you feel so inclined, throw a few pics up in the goroka thread now and then. I’m fascinated with the line. Got another batch from azure recently that will be run next to the originals, to see if there’s anything unique between em.
About 80 days… they are more or less fully seeded but I think there is about another couple of weeks to go maybe… I’ve tried to select for shorter flower time but with only limited success, they are.maybe a few weeks faster than when I started but not a lot🤷♂️
Interesting, thanks for that, I have noticed some of the pheno’s have fatter leaves and shorter internodes, so I’m figuring it’s the southern china influence is where that comes from.
There are so many cool threads all hidden in here somewhere. I agree with you about liking the older posts. If you haven’t already read it, the thread from OldTimer or Oldtimer1(?) …about making bonsai plants for your mothers and favorite clones, is a great one. It might be pinned and the screen name might be a little different but I bet you could google it and find it at the very worst. Lots of people here are familiar with it. peace
Yeah, as Ive heard, the VBlack had the Chinese Black in it before it hit the forums.
Im just not sure if it came back from Vietnam as Viet x Chinese, or if thats how the veteran did it when he got back. Its hard finding stable males in pure sativa lines, so it would make sense that he used a Yunnan male thats only a few villages away from N. Vietnam.
The DaLat line seems to be more pure and throws wheat phenos like the Oaxacan.
@Wuachuma
it did happen like this:
The Australian Guy who provided "Vietblack at wellknown Auction (i forgot the name of Auction rightnow) searched trough old Seedstash, if anything would still sprout , it was knowingly Vietnamese Seedstash.
So they found a very Good Vietnamese Plant.
He planned on selling it on an Auction, but figured most people will not take a 20 weeker Strain, and in a Rush he outcrossed it with a northern Vietnamese (basically Chinese style genetic).
HE went to the Auction wich took place in 2000 and offered this Cross instead, back then very few would care for true sativa.
Yeah, and then he lost his Pure Vietnamese in a Fire in Australia, so the only survivor was theis outcross.
The VB I have is not from these seeds but from someone who collected them in Vietnam, they supposedly come from the area around Tuyên Quang which is not far from the border, but you know it’s always hard to know the exact province I guess🤷♂️
How so? I haven’t really had an issue myself , but I’m not a pro, nor have I had the particularly high rates of hermies that some people seem to, maybe it’s a climate thing?
oh really, i never knew the position, thats not the most famous location in Vietnam, not saying its bad, the copterpilot who smoked em all liked em all very much, but still…
im surprised, it actually looks totally fine to me…
Yeah, I don’t know it hey, it’s one of the few places is SE Asia I haven’t got around to visiting, one day!
Lol, fortunately for me I don’t think I’ve had that kinda bad luck, but come the think of it I don’t think I’ve ever had a hermi from them either
I think the one you have going is my favourite pheno, it’s looking more like the darker leaved purple stem type that gets super frosty… but slow to flower as they all are unfortunately.
When I say dark leaves I just mean darker than the lime green a lot of them are… this pheno
Vietnam Black - been looking for - the few banks that offer it are always sold out (FYI - this is/was Willy Nelsons favorate strain - read that he quit smoking becasue of health issues _ guess edibiles are the answer for him - believe a stain is named after him)
