I’ve read that it may be possible with cannabis, but according to forums, few people if anyone has encountered it. And before you ask, no, there weren’t any herms, nor would a seed be that developed so early on even if there were.
I initially thought this seed was from contamination from another breeding project so I labeled it as such and decided I would Bx with the same pollen this grow but while pollinating it I noticed the seed.
So my thought is, either it was never contaminated and it was capable of Apomixis from the start or it was accidentally pollinated and the resulting cross is Apomixis. With this singular seed, I can do a proper control experiment since I also have clones of the plant that I have not yet pollinated.
That happens to me when I have pollen around and other girls in pre-flower. Even just 1 or 2 pre flowers are enough. The seeds in these calyxes are ripe before the main bud mass is even developed enough to receive pollen.
Because my veg area is in the same room as my pollination cab this happens to me a lot…
I always just knock these “pre-flower” beans into my “seed graveyard” pots where my unripe beans go to grow.
Hmm… well, it’s definitely possible to pollinate preflower calyx’s. And errant pollen can remain surprisingly viable for a couple months after last use depending on how you applied it in the area previously.
Honestly, I thought the same thing even though that has never happened to me neither but there has been no exposure to pollen. I would think the other females would do the same but I looked at all of them and nothing.
Now, I do have a male that was quick to drop pollen but it was isolated in another room within the first week of flower and it didn’t actually start dropping pollen for another week after that.
Part of me thinks there was somehow contamination but what are the chances of this being the case twice with no signs from the other females of being pollinated? Also, this plant was the singular seed found in the mother which I also assumed was accidentally pollenated but now, I’m not so sure
I’ll be running the clones after these finish to see if they do it again, will be sure to not have any males going so I can be sure. Will also run the seed I found after along with the progeny since it has been pollinated
Well if its truly apomixis, the only way to find out without genetic testing is gonna be to grow that seed out. If it comes out looking as a clone of the mom, could’ve definitely been apomixis and the mom may or may not be a polyploid. If it comes out looking any different at all, it’s not apomoxis and was stray pollen.
Well the tent gets sprayed down/cleaned with bleach after every grow and I’m more thorough after a pollination. So I don’t think it’s anything that was floating around from a previous grow. I do have a male (which I initially suspected) going but I don’t think there was nearly enough time between when it started dropping pollen and now for there to be a fully developed seed. It was also isolated a week into flower and I started spraying myself with water when I would go back n forth checking on the females and isolated male. But idk, I’m also not 100% convinced there wasn’t pollen involved only because I’ve never seen this before.
It is either Falkor (Barney’s Farm: Red Dragon [Fem] (Utopia Haze {Brazilian Sativa} X West Himalayan Kush) X District Flora: Fublue [Male] (Barney’s Farm: Crimea Blue X ACE: Congo)
Very very cool! If it truly is then gem is an understatement! And after seeing the name I’m even more intrigued as Falkor and me go way way back, I’ve been obsessed with him, atreyu and that movie since I saw it in the theatre as a young boy. Got my fingers crossed for you my friend. That one in a billion find
Mannn, I watched the cassette version so many times that I wore it out. Never Ending Story was THE SHIT, of all the remakes you see these days it still surprises me that no one even considered this movie would do well as a reboot movie or show. Probably for the best thought, they’d likely screw it hp anyway.
And yes, I think if it really is Apomixis I would have a gem but the only issue is that it produces only one seed. I won’t know for sure until I grow the clones and the seed of course but the next step would be trying to find a pheno that produces more than one seed and continuously breeding for that trait until it does it en masse? Like is it feasible to turn this into a breeding tool that can be an alternative to using colloidal silver to self strains? I feel that would be the only way a trait like this could be useful.
