I really like fragrant flowers. Springtime flowers from bulbs are pretty and nicely scented, but they don’t last very long.
There are several annuals which will provide pretty and fragrant flowers which will last for many months, my very favorite of which is nicotiana.
Nicotiana seeds germinate quickly, but they are teeny tiny. You press them gently into the soil without covering them up, as light helps germination.
The aroma provided by several nicotiana plants is truly delightful. On a calm evening the scent is almost mesmerizing and soothing. I love to smoke a bowl out among the plants, and when the smoke from the ganja drifts away, my nostrils are amazed at the enveloping fragrance of the flowers.
I recommend nicotiana to anyone that likes nice smelling flowers which will last for many months in your garden. They do very well in containers and in beds.

Here are some that I grew from seed a while back. Pink and purple.

Wow you’re so far ahead of us here in the frozen North haha. Just starting to see crocus and daffodils poking up, lots of stuff of budding now though. Is that an avocado with the tp roll and toothpicks?

Yeah, I’ll look into those. They sound nice. I dig the fragrant flowers.

It was a spoof on the Avocado trick… she’s trying to get the TP roll to root and grow more rolls, since there aren’t any left to buy! :upside_down_face:

Lol right…yes I’m a bit slow

Ooh! I’ve read about the nicotania! Now that I know it comes in pink, I’m even more intrigued lol

Work is starting to wind down. So, finding projects to keep busy. Found these cheap easter baskets. Gonna turn them into fun flower planters. Also thinking about making a flower tower

Went to the bank and Big Lots today! It felt like the best 2 hours of my life. lol Tomorrow, I’m going to Home Depot! So stupid, how excited I am. I’m getting a little RedRum over here… :hocho:

One of my new scented geraniums is forming it’s first flower! Also, some babies sprouted in the pouring rain last night. 3 blue dianthus and 1 pink one now. Also a yarrow and the petunia speck is still hanging in there! Unbelievable! Butterfly bush is forming flowers, the dwarf nasturtiums have like 4 little dainty dwarf leaves (they are so cute). Never grown dwarves in these before. Saw one of my new trumpet lilies popping. As a matter of fact a lot of my lilies are popping up. All my tigers and other asiatics. Also, some of my orientals too. The David’s Phlox that @MomOnTheRun sent me has like 2 sets of leaves that came up and also the catmint she sent is growing back now! The garden is getting really fun now! Oh yeah, my delphiniums came out of dormancy as well. Good times!

Dad has assembled the new tiller. I just need some fresh gas and my man and I can get the first run at the veggie patch done as well.

Today they were limiting people in Home Depot. They weren’t yesterday so I just drove home. Actually seemed more of a fire hazard with only one exit open for the 100 people plus employees they were letting in. So, my flower planter project is on hold.

Thrilled to report that the black eyed susan vine seeds finally sprouted. They sure took their sweet time! Guess they needed the perfect temp. The rain surely helped as well. I’m most excited for these because I’ve never seen any other colors of this besides heirloom yellow and black and mine are mixed in oranges , yellows and reds.

I marked a big spot in my cutting garden that I may need bulbs replaced. Since I can’t remember everything I planted in there, I will have to wait until summer to see if something comes up there. If not, they didn’t survive critters, bugs or rotted away.

Most of the new bulbs I planted are showing their heads slowly but surely, more every day. I read that chamomile is a great companion for raspberries so I will throw some seeds down tomorrow Still no candy lily or bells of Ireland direct sowed coming up. Still waiting…

Spent the afternoon in the garden. Fed all of the container plants. Direct sowed Chamomile and forget me nots out by the new raspberry bush. It has quite a few leaves on it now, but the damn dog busted off the top of the cane! Grr! Another one should grow in this year right? Never grown one before.

Sprinkled more slug pellets around, most are gone though. Something is eating all the leaves on my butterfly bush, whatever it is will probably munch on the dahlias (I had a sighting today) too. Spent time on my local ag coop extension. It is probably either a flying bug or a beetle and best dealt with horticultural soap or neem. Sigh, guess I’ll have to mix some neem tmw. It makes me gag just thinking about it. lol The smell doesn’t just repel insects. Blech

Started 2 flats of flower seeds. 3 different types of Celosia, dwarf sunflowers, candytuft, coreopsis, bacopa, angelona, a fuseable petunia/bacopa, Orange Balm, nemesia and salvia. I know, I know, but I plan to give away plants this year, too.

It’s been real warm here and my tulips have been pushing leaves up for a couple of weeks. Pretty early here for most stuff, but sometimes things bloom too early here and then get killed by a frost or freeze. Looks like that’ll happen this year, too. It’s gonna be in the 70’s in a week and has been 65 mostly for almost two. My roses are putting new shoots out, too. I’m geting a big jump on things this year as far as cleaning the landscaping up and organizing it better. Once things start growing it’s all I can do to keep it under control.

I bet a lot of stuff gets killed on late snows or freezes there. Colorado has the wackiest weather! My tulips flowered really quick after showing. Hopefully they will come and go before that so you can enjoy them! I always cut my roses back in January. They are grown back now and getting ready to bloom! It’s usually perfect timing, once the freesia and daffs die off, the roses are ready to go. I sure wish bulb flowers lasted longer. That’s the only bummer. You only get a couple weeks with them.

For containers… I saw a neat trick where you plant them in layers so you have blooms from spring to fall. Tulips on the bottom(like 18" deep)… :pancakes: etc. on up to the shallow ones. :+1:

It took me awhile to notice when each flower starts blooming here. Now that I’m pretty savvy, I could do something like that!

My new annual bed is showing symptoms of my high phosphorus soil levels. I’m seeing clear signs of calcium lockout. I still had some transplant formula from last year that supposed to eat the extra nutrients. So I threw a bunch down. Waiting on my amendments to get delivered. In the meantime, I’m out of cal mag but will do a drench once they arrive.

My delphinium is out of dormancy and starting to form a flower. Found one monkey seed sprout from 1st batch of seeds I started. I always do 3 starters of each seed in case some don’t sprout and I seem to have gotten, 1 monkey, 1 petunia, 2 yarrows, 1 pink dianthus and all 3 blue. None of the impatiens which doesn’t surprise me as they are finicky and best started under lights. Guess I will stick with buying these in starters if I want more in the shade bed. All 3 carnations that I started from seed last year are blooming. They were a mixed pack of seeds. So far 1 plant has traditional pink double ruffle petals and 1 has single petal white ones. Still waiting on 3rd one to open to find out. The 2 recent flats of seeds not showing sprouts yet.

I received all of my soil amendments per my annual soil test. Measured out the 114 pounds and watered into all the planters and the veggie bed aka cannabis bed and it rained. The plants are all super perky and happy today, I’ll tell ya. I love it after a good feed. There are epic amounts of things sprouting out there. Right now, as far as flowers in the ground go… The 3 carnation plants I started from seed have more flowers than I’ve ever seen on a plant. The 3rd plant’s flowers are starting to open, so I know that I have another white one, but not sure if they are gonna be double ruffled petal or more single petal whites like the 2nd one. I’m happy either way. They have a very pleasant and subtle smell of cloves. It’s nice and not overwhelming. My butterfly bush also has mass amounts of flowers formed but haven’t changed to purple yet. The entire cutting garden and pathway through the garden is completely filled with volunteer cosmos and violas. I love it! Even some volunteer sweet alyssum! Oh yeah, found a volunteer nasturtium today too and so many morning glory volunteers I may have to tear some out. Aside from the spring bulbs which all the flowers have died off. There are tons of lilies and glads that have popped up everywhere. Dahlias are slow to show this year. Hoping they didn’t die, get eaten or rot under there. I have a lot of stuff vegging, but the planters still look pretty naked. My jillion container plants are in various states of bloom though, so color abounds in the garden regardless. Nothing super interesting or photo worthy yet that you haven’t seen. When I get a new bloom, y’all know I’ll post a pic for you.

Some of the new seeds I started are just now starting to show. All 3 dwarf sunflowers, a celosia or two and a coreopsis so far. Still itty bitty, but spring is so much fun. I’m pretty sure most of you follow my outdoor cannabis grow, but I have started most of my seeds for the year on Saturday, so waiting for them to show is always exciting and nerve wracking. lol It’s a fun time right now in the garden, especially before everything goes ape shit and the weeds get outta control. Hoping all that mulch is gonna help. Not much came up in the shade. Disappointing. Just gotta keep trying until I find the right plants. Baby Godzilla the painted fern is still growing in though. Every week it seems to have 2 new leafs forming. It’s still little, but it’s steady and seems to be happy. It still makes me do a victory dance when I look at it. It looks like the forget me nots I direct sowed by the raspberry bush are coming up. Really early to tell, cuz it could turn out to be weeds, but I think it’s them. I also identified a few of the Bells of Ireland seedlings I put out. I’m certain on these as I’ve grown these before and recognize the first true set of leaves. I’ve realized that a few times now, that I recognize all of these flower seedlings now, not just cannabis. Funny how that works. Still pulling baby tomato sprouts out of the planters. A few hundred now, I’d say. Well, I’m high and rambling. Probably forgot to journal what I came here for… lol Peace out, friends. Stay healthy and play in your garden.

Wow, it sounds like it’s full on at your house. We’re almost two months ahead of the last two years spring. Very few nights below freezing and 60’s and now 70’s and things are sprouting and budding. I’m working my ass off trying to get a handle on the property before it all bust loose. I’m getting so much done with this nice weather.

I may not end up planting a whole lot of anything this year but just keep at this property to get it in the shape I want it. I’m taking down old raised bed planters and will be relocating them somewhere. I’m trying to get an area set up for some chickens. I have a small wood shed type of building that will become the new coop. I’ve been finally getting really excited about this place. It was and still can be a little overwhelming but now that I’m making such progress the ideas are flowing and my excitement level is right where I wanted it to be… Patience is not my strong suit.

Have fun today! another 72º day here! peace

You saw my yard from the beginning. It was super overwhelming. It helped for me to break it all down into small parts and focus on one thing at a time. Little by little buddy. Sounds like you are already getting there!
