IF life doesn’t throw you curve balls would it even be a life worth living?
Such exciting challenges!
A few months ago after my Sister skirted her RV - I was there helping her with something else - I strongly recommended she also insulate it. My entreaty was met with skepticism - this RV has one of those gimmicky “Polar Package” things or whatever each manufacture calls it, I was told. I suggested she insulate her skirting after my experience in my Niece’s RV. She used patina’d (aged, old, used) Corrugated Steel for skirting running vertically and it actually looks great. Whoever did the work did a good job!
My Sister’s pipes froze.
She messaged me this yesterday, a link to R-1.9 and 1/2 thick rigid foil-faced insulation…$10ish. She asked about reflective surface on it and I said it’s intended to retain heat on the reflected side but she doesn’t have any heat under there. Catch my reply
I asked her to allow me some time to find something better and more appropriate for her situation.
After my research I reported back to her this…
Hi. The higher R values are moderately more expensive than the one you linked to. I’m not sure of you budget for this. But, I think this would work great in your situation. Yes, it’s reflective surfaces This stuff is built for that type of installation. I’m not sure how tall your skirting is but in my mind (not being there) I think this might be the right size. Let me know what you think. It’s 200ft so I think it’s long enough. Reflectix R- 21 Attic Wall Unfaced Reflective Roll Insulation 200-sq ft (24-in W x 100-ft L) Multi-pack

I discovered when applied a particular way that that bubble foil insulation can attain a R-21. In a worst case scenario it is R-3, which still beats what she linked me to. I believe in her situation she should get around R-7 in her application.
I asked her to let me know the height dimensions (highest to lowest) of her skirting and I can better advise narrowing down the product needed.
In my research I found Heat Tape that is new to me. A customizable Kit form of Heat Tape.
I don’t know a thing about it and I don’t have time for a deep dive and she needs it now.
I did advise she buy some heat tape for her Shore Water which is just a spigot popping just clear of the soil, out in the open, not weatherized at all. I did advise a small enclosure for it but it’s literally just a pipe barely clearing the ground with a spigot on it, that’s all that is exposed, and it is exposed, it’s not under any cover at all.
Then, also today…
I’d been intending to go out to the water service/water softener enclosure to make sure it was ready for Winter. I have been busy doing other things and recuperating, still () !
I was urged to go out there today when I saw the temps in the enclosure went below freezing.
Enclosure, set to turn Heat on at 38F to prevent the chance of freezing.
This is current outdoor temps, #2 is in the Attic and #1 is in my bathroom pointing at the exposed hot and cold water plumbing for the plastic claw-foot bathtub (my Crower! ).
The Hot Water for the tub was frozen earlier today. I have left the Cold Water trickling since the freezing temps arrived. I thought about letting the Hot trickle and decided against it, not knowing the lower heat lamp was rodent food
Note that I already knew that the temperature probe I’m using out there had fallen from where I placed it. Last I recall it is laying in the very bottom of the space, some of which is open but it’s well bellow the platform the water softener is perched on. It’s not providing an accurate reading. I will address that the next time I’m out there.
This is what I found…
Rodent Lunch was served! My plan flouted by a rodent! I didn’t expect that for some reason
Last year I ran this space heater…
I plugged it in to make sure it worked before I put it back out there and was reminded why it’s been sitting on the floor here since Spring!
It whines like nobodies business. It whines like it was meant to whine. Wow! I forgot about that.
So, I think I bought this one earlier this year for the water enclosure but started using it in here before that! And, forgot that I had done it, bought it, for that reason!
This is the heater that I was using where I lay my head down…now in the bathroom.
It was 29F when I put it in there - IN MY BATHROOM!!! . It’s 36F at the time of that screenshot.
I should go out to the enclosure again tonight to to make sure the heater is in fact still on and move the probe. Cold out there though!!!
I do know the surviving heat lamp and the heater are working because the Inkbird Temp Controller I use is still sending a signal showing the circuit hasn’t popped.
It’s 66F at my desk but that was only AFTER I put a box fan on top of the propane heater pushing hot air out into the room. It was 60F when I got up the other day. 2 heat sources going on and it’s 60F at me desk and 46F or so where I lay my head. I saw it at a 33F/36F range.
Attic insulation is not complete yet. Insulating that back window hasn’t even started. I’m about to just start shoving things in the areas where cold in entering, anything.
I saw the other day that that A/C unit has slipped a little bit. I’m going to make a shelf for it and insulated it on the next day that work is possible.
Right now I have to try and fix that whiny space heater. I’m now short 1 space heater, not including the oil filled mentioned below (barely works, IF it works at all…it was a great space heater for many years).
Like I needed something else to dig in to!
There are 2 of those white space heaters. Both were here when I began living here. They have been working remarkably well, though 1’s base has been broken this entire time. I have been able to direct their heat, even point it down. Maybe that caused the whining?!?!
I do have an old Oil Filled heater but the controls no longer work. It turns on and just goes to whatever temperature it decides to put out! I’m going to plug it in where I lay my head.
I do hope you are ALL making it a great WARM night!
Edit Add: Oh, I forgot! I’m in Full Winter Gear, even Winter Gloves at times - in the Classroom. At my desk not 6 foot from the propane heater with Booster Fan atop it!
Edit Add II: I did take the new space heater (the one I bought for that purpose! ) out to the enclosure but it wouldn’t let me tip it forward then turn it on - the old whites would work in that orientation.
Edit Add III: When I turned on the oil filled heater back where I lay my head down it displayed the ambient temperature at 37F. Let’s see how it heats up the space. Again, that window nearest where I lay my head and where that heater is is a leaking pig! Gotta address that window!
