FWIW, “The Real Kansas City” release is full of top notch tracks! When it comes to Cherry Red, though, fucking Joe Turner and Pete Johnson… It simply does not get better than that! This is in the early middle part of both men’s careers.
This is the 1956 remake, which for me is the definitive version. All of the tracks on this album are remakes of some of Big Joe’s previous hits, and for me, they are all their respective definitive versions. This is perhaps my favorite Big Joe Turner album/release/whatever ever. Every song is perfect, and no wonder, just look at who’s playing! All smokin’ great jazz players, except Pete Johnson, who was arguably the greatest stride piano player ever. That’s all. This album is some seriously rarefied musical atmosphere. I can’t swear to it (and I just re-read the booklet and it does not address arrangements), but it seems to me I read that these were all head arrangements! So sure, they’re all fairly simple, just perfectly executed, that’s all!
When I hear Pete Johnson’s opening first few bars, that gentle rocking, I literally get shivers down my spine. No shit. Every song on this album, and that’s what it is, an album, has that effect on me!
I know, my scan is askew!
By far one of my favorite blues albums of all times. If you’re a fan of vocal blues, you owe it to yourself to listen to the entire album. It’s so fucking beautiful!
Morning Glories is my favorite song on the album. Sadly, I cannot find it on YouTube.
