What do we think of topping?

I’m toying with the idea of not topping for this next go-round. I feel like my plants will grow faster, get more light, stretch more, and of course finish faster overall. I also feel like I can fit more plants this way. Of course the yield won’t be the same, but with topping I grow more than enough for myself and my loved ones anyway.

What are y’alls opinions?

Fitting more plants could also offset the lower per-plant yield, I think. The only issue I can see arising is running out of vertical space too quickly.

lower buds wont receive enough lights… if you do lst in the main branch , there is no problem

I think your position on this subject is good for outdoor.

With indoor you’ve got a very small window of light depth so topping helps everything stay uniform with a little LST.

But really its dealer’s choice.

It’s your call :+1:

Yeah, that would be my main concern. It’d be tough to have an even canopy without topping, especially with multi-strain grows.

I prefer to bend my tops…you get the same results as topping, it will bush out and you get to keep the tops…

It sounds like you’re going for a “Sea of Green” / SoG approach. Small plants and using more of them per sq ft, focusing on the main cola.

Seems worth a try to me :person_shrugging:
But then again I like variety, so I always wish I could grow more strains at a time

WOAH that’s crazy cool. Once I can go from seed to harvest without any catastrophes, I’ve got plenty of ideas for experiments. This just made the list.

I do it all the time and been doing it for years, it works. The tops will right itself, it will start to grow upright again and your plants will bush out also.

Yeeeeeah, one thing I can always count on is getting ahead of myself. 5 minutes into this topic, I can tell topping is probably still gonna be a requirement for this next round. I’ve got 5 different strains popped already.

All indica-dominant, but still.

That’s wicked. Thanks so much for sharing dude! :innocent::+1:

Bonsai wire is a great tool for bending. Amazon.com: Anodized Aluminum Bonsai Training Wire 5-Size Starter Set with Canvas Bag - 1.0mm, 1.5mm, 2.0mm, 2.5mm, 3.0mm (147 feet total) - Choose Your Color (5 Sizes, Black) : Patio, Lawn & Garden

Something else to consider is that a single big cola is a risk. If it rots your whole enterprise is toast.

With multiple tops you have a little insurance.

That’s just how I do it.

That’s true too, and something I’ve considered, but I’m either just not at that level yet, or I haven’t had genetics that are capable yet. I’m truly envious; must be a nice problem to have.

I do know that the Shiva Skunk x Forum Cookies from @Hashpants that I’ll be running has produced some insanely big colas, or at least that was my interpretation of the pics he shared. I think that one could have the potential for gigantic rot-prone buds.

IMO topping is the correct move inside unless you are really packing in a million plants and stuffing tents.

I’ve got some wire, but it’s the thin cheap stuff from Home Depot. I might need to pick some of this up. Thanks for the rec!

Heres the same plant …I did this experiment over 20yrs ago because of hieght restrictions in my Phototrons…this plant is in revegging mode but you can see it right itself and the main top is still alive…I keep it simple and just use the wires from store bought breads…no need to spend money on bonsai wires…

Dude, that is so fucking cool. I might just have to try it this time around.

I don’t buy much bread or other products with wire ties… Plus, I untwist and reuse my wires when I’m done with them anyhow. I’m sure the environmental impact of the metal itself is low, but it’s coated in this green plastic shit that I’m sure will stick around for thousands of years. I like to reuse as much of it as I can. The bonsai wire looks like it doesn’t have that issue.

Scratch that, it looks like the bonsai wire is coated with that same stuff. I’ll prolly just stick with what I have, in that case. :man_shrugging:
