What grow tent size for a small scale seed breeding run?

Hi guys!
I’m looking for some suggestions on what size growtent i should buy to have some small seed breeding experiment in…
I will be reverse sexing a female i already have and know for sure that’s fire and i will have a few clones from it that will be reversed and kept in a small tent or in the worst case and old closet
Would a 4ft x 4ft tent be plenty of space for like 6-8 different females that will be pollinated ?
I’m planning on placing the reversed clones in between the girls and maybe have them raised from the ground so i won’t have to grow them to the same size as the girls.
Not sure about the quality and amount of the pollen that will come of them so…
And what kind of (hepa) filter i need to pick to keep the pollen inside the tent?

I think a 4x4 is a perfect tent! I have a 2x4, two 4x4s, and a 5x5. the 2x4 was my first and housed two plants no problem. The 4x4 give plenty of space but not too overcrowded in rooms.

To answer your question about how many female a tent can house it entirely up to you. I personally don’t like my girls touching especially if I used separate pollen on them. When I do that I quarantine them for a few day so the pollen can settle and do its magic before grouping them together again. If you are using the same pollen then by all means cram them in there. I think @DougDawson has a good 10+ plants in a 5x5 tent that is growing incredibly well.

I have a males and females in my 5x5 tent with six and take up most of the space. When i want pollen to move around I will stick the males infront or close to the fans so the it moves freely in the wind current.

I hope this helps Growmie! Plenty of people to get solid advice from here. I am still learning but have a good grasp of whats been working for me. :sunglasses: :call_me_hand:

I’d argue a 4x2 would be plenty for you! I just finished a small seed run in a 4x2. Used 1 male and 4 small females. Ended up with somewhere above 2000+ seeds. I had a new prefilter on a carbon filter inside the tent and it vented into a closed space so no pollen was vented out of the space. I had a clip fan in there that I would unplug anytime I was doing work in there. The smaller plants and smaller space made for less pollen to deal with for me, but still plenty to pollinate everything and save pollen for future use. Good luck! I hope you post your journey here!

I think a 4x4 would fit your needs well. Maybe a 4x2 if you kept the plants small but I’d say for 8 plants a 4x4 is a safer bet.

As far as keeping the pollen contained, I think your best bet is probably some type of hepa or merv 9+ filter on the intake vents if your other flower tent, and make sure that other tent stays sealed up while your working in the tent with pollen. Then spray some water around the area once you zip up that pollen tent again (to help kill any stray pollen).
I find I get pollen clouds that like to float out of the room when working with the male plants. So even with a proper filter in the pollen tent, some pollen will still probably escape. That is why I suggest intake filters that can handle pollen for your other tent(s).

I am not 100% sure but I don’t think a carbon filter can filter out all pollen. I’ve heard of people wrapping a layer of merv filter around the outside of the carbon filter exhaust (in the pollen tent) to help contain pollen.

You could run just a straight hepa filter on the exhaust of the pollen tent but that’s not going to help with the weed smell. So you’ll probably want a carbon filter for that, which is why I mention wrapping some extra merv filter around the outside of the carbon filter.

I was talking to Gypsy Nirvanna about this a few months ago and he said that a grower could easily get tens of thousands of seeds from a 3 foot x 3 foot space.

Your post should use rhe word “hacking” instead of breeding:) said with love
No real breeding in 24 or 44 except phases.

Said that:
A 30cm tall famale plant fully pollinated into a 1-3lpot. Can produce easily 100-300 seeds if not 500. This plant can fit under a 85W LED in a 6060120 tent, even small space.

You don’t need another tent to produce and collect pollen, or hybridise two plants.
From windowsill to chamber male…to cut on a glass of water you can collect pollen …pollinate even into the same room if talented.

If your tight for space try tents that stack on top

I have a 24 x24 x 57 inch tent and a 24 x 24 x 30 inch tent on top

I’ve seen other sizes available in this style

I find it very versatile

I did a hunt, reversal, and breeding run of 100+ autos in a 2x4 earlier this year. I love my little small tent projects

Ended up culling down to 10-15. It would be even easier with photos…

With nursey bag of 0.3l ( 10x10cm) i can fit no more than 72 plants.
How did you achieved 100+ plants for selection?

Howdy @HighBreed, a while back a buddy of mine setup a small 2x2 tent with a compact florescent light fixture. It was probably somewhere between 75 and 150 watts, I can’t remember exactly. The plants were in solo cups and were fairly scraggly due to the setup. Buddy was only running them for seeds to save the genetics. I was skeptical that the seed run would produce much quality due to the minimal setup but I realized that I was misinformed. While the plants didn’t produce great flowers, they still produced quality seeds. Some of those resulting seeds gave way to incredibly wonderful plants.

So I have changed my tune when it comes to what’s required or needed to produce quality seeds. If my buddy was able to make some great seeds in a 2x2 with a compact florescent fixture I’m quite confident that you can make great seeds in something as large as a 4x4 and more elaborate lighting. A 4x4 can fit 6-8 decent sized plants easily and could even fit many many more if going for numbers instead of size. Basically you could fit as many plants as the space can hold containers of the size you wish to finish in. It could be as small a container size as solo cups or something slightly larger like a 4" square container if going for numbers or it could be larger containers of going for less plants that are more robust in size. Plenty space for a variety of styles in a 4x4 if seeds are the primary goal. Some flower exclusively in a 4x4 and it’s enough space for fairly substantial harvests of flower, so much so one could selectively pollinate and have a bunch of seedless flowers to smoke as well as some seeded with hundreds of seeds.

Since you’re reversing I wouldn’t recommend smoking the flowers from those, that’s a personal option and preference. If you have 4-8 plants being pollinated in that space fully pollinated and the plants are robust being well lit and filling up the canopy I would expect you to make thousands of seeds.

For the pollen, a carbon filter hooked up to the exhaust should be sufficient to mitigate unwanted contamination of other growing areas you wish to keep pollen free, the use of negative pressure will be helpful, think laminar flow hood technique. Even better if that carbon filter is placed where the exhaust airstream isn’t able to be reintroduced as supply air for the garden space you’re wanting to keep pollen free. Hope that helps. Many blessings and much love

I can grow 200 on the floor of a 2x4 in trays, then I plant multiples per pot in 1 and 3 gallon pots.

One of my past hunts… Blue lights will keep the plants shorter.

I unfortunately can’t do an in dept study like that
I may run 20 plants or less
Find the best female
Collect pollen from all males them with mixed pollen pollinate the selected female

If I find 3 totally different females they all get pollinated
I feel it will be a more diverse seed group

Beautiful and inspirational.
At 500 as per L. Burbank starting selection can be done… true and not true.bravo

Could tou share some tips?
Seedlings in trays.
Untill which stage can you grow such numbers?
After? For vege stage only or flower also?

Any advise very helpful.
Thanks

This really depends on what you are doing. A 4x4 tent will be plenty of space for 6-8 females if you don’t let them get too big. The smaller you keep the plants, the more you will be able to fit. As an example, here are 4 plants in a 4x4.

Here are 12 plants in a 5x5.

I am not a fan of packing the plants in so tight but will be killing the 5 males when they stop producing pollen which will give me more room in there. I have a dehumidifier running outside the tent keeping the air it brings in at around 40% RH and fans blowing on them from both the top and bottom of the canopy.

As for keeping pollen in the tent, that will be extremely difficult IMO. Pollen grains are smaller than the human eye can see and are meant to be carried by wind. Even the air flow caused by you walking will send pollen flying through the air. I would imagine you would have fans running as well so as soon as you open that tent door, out it will come. Pollen can get out through the hole where the zipper comes together as well. It’s best to keep any tent with pollen in it as isolated as possible.

So in the end, any size tent will do as long as you grow the plants to work with the space you have available. :v:

I put a mother fucking behemoth sized tent together last night by myself.
Man they got some headroom now…

You can take them all the way in
A tray or a small hydro cloner. I routinely will flip clones before they’re rooted and pollinate them right away and get 20-100ish beans that look at :man_shrugging:

I often have trays like this sitting around. Nothing stays in my garden until it’s been through extensive stress testing. The big winner in this tray is is a THc-V/CBG x Harle tsu cross. It’s routinely kicking the ass it a variety of elite clone only stuff I’m stress testing and vigor. She’s putting on a show in flower in my drying tent now :joy:
