Hi guys. I put an avocado to the water And it suprisingly sprouted
I still have it in the water And the root is really beautifull. I also started to feed it with Basic grow Nutrients. What is the next Best thing? Is it possible to grow it in hydro bubler? Od Just Pure Coco? I would just like to grow the Best avocado possible. Thanks for any ideas
I have no idea but very cool
Looks good, there should be no light getting to the roots, it will damage them.
I might have a go at growing one myself, do they flower.
avocados are great. keep in mind they will eventually grow into an absolutely enormous tree. If you have the space, light, and time, they can produce a ton of food in the right climate. I’ve never grown one myself, but some of my friends had avocado trees where I grew up.
Trees uptake nutrients at a slower rate than plants. If you plant it in coco I’d feed it very lightly no more than once a week. Or plant it in a 50/50 mix potting soil and coco.
Allow good drainage and lightly dry between watering.
I’m doing both of those growing lemon and fig trees in the house. I plan to try me an avocado myself here soon so keep us updated!
Not in Canada lol, unless I get a 40 gal pot to grow it in the living room, my cathedral ceiling is 16ft high in the middle. Save me buying 14ft Christmas trees lol.
Just remember it’ll take about 5 years before it will produce any avocado. Well worth the wait imo as I love Avocado and the ability to eat one a day as I please is tempting to start one myself
Good luck sir… soil is your best option especially with the time required to bear fruit. The cold will be an issue also. I’ve had avocado trees go dormant for almost a year from back to back cold snaps and I live about as far away south from Canada as possible. Not saying it CANT be done, but will definitely test your patience
. And as far as the ‘light is bad for roots’ myth, it’s just that. I’ve started pits and left them in large mason jars until basically root bound.
Yeah I’m not sure where the light myth came from. In practice they do just fine. Try a windowsill jar grow for something and watch the roots flourish.
Maybe there’s a micro that hates light and someone freaked out one day over a hydro grow😅
I have 2 avocado trees more than 50 years old in my backyard. I seriously doubt that one could grow one to fruition indoors or in cold climates. They are a pretty tropical tree, but good luck. They take a long long time to get fruit.
Also, I know that orchids are most often grown in clear pots. Maybe some roots are more sensitive to direct light or sun though.
I thought it was because the light causes algae.
The algae stops the plant getting the nutrients?
In theory it makes sense. In practice you’re not growing in stagnant water.
My mother has plants of all kinds on her windowsill. Every single plant survived in those cups. Almost all formed an algae and with no nutrients added and only straight tap water they’re all doing pretty good, just not flourishing. Only the parsley is pale and that’s it. Otherwise it keeps growing just fine. The window isn’t in direct sun for longer than 4 hours.
Maybe it’s something odd in my house that allows this? Otherwise I’d expect people freak out at algae and never test run to see if it’ll do anything. In this case it actually does appear to be beneficial. Though through years of adapting if at all it’s been attached to nearly every plant from succulents to herbs. This has been going on in every house I’ve ever lived in and no window plant is ever harmed by the algae. It’s just unsightly
I actually have algae on the bottom of my hempy tub on my current grow and she’s looking sweet as a nut
Best to grow the avocado in soil.
I would not hold my breath about it eventually fruiting since most all avocados need a pollinizer to develop fruit.

Give the plant as much sun and warmth as you possibly can. Avocados do not like wet feet so go easy on the watering schedule.
We had Lula, Hall, and Booth 7 varieties in the grove my grandfather planted.

Yes, takes 2 to produce fruit. I think it took about 6 years for my first fruit, but a year of that the plant went basically dormant. Also had one in a 30 gallon that became root bound. Outdoor FTW
So I looked it up and avocado flower has both male and female parts and is capable of self pollenation. You would have to be the pollinator however.
That’s what I do with my lemon tree. I put on some Barry white and bust out a paint brush and go from flower to flower and let the magic happen! Last year I got about a dozen lemons and looks like many more this year. It would be easier to buy lemons from the store but I have fun with it. I wouldn’t be so quick to dismiss @Fisch and the practicality of his efforts. There’s also a lot of discussion about whether he can grow it in a clear container? That’s just standard procedure for starting an avocado seed. He’s not planning on growing it like that.
I’d go the light potting soil route with lots of drainage and start with a 1 gallon pot. Just have fun with it.
Too bad the species of pollinator that would do it for you isn’t something you can introduce to it either😅
I mean you can, but you have to be a beekeeper.
@OniTenshu @Ghandisflipflop I got a lot of algae when I had the greenhouse up this winter. As long as you scrape it off the top of the soil every once in awhile it’s fine. If not it will form an impenetrable barrier to water and nutes.
Soil and soilless probably have different rules than I know for algae. In a hydro grow it doesn’t appear to affect the roots negatively at all and just looks nasty
