What smells will pass through the chimney and be noticeable outside?

When trimming and drying sometimes I dont have a carbon scrubber running or at hand.

What if the room has a chimney and a wood oven?

Can smell go through the chimney to the outside?

For example if I am running a wood oven at the chimney, can smells go through that fire to the outside e.g. when trimming?

What if the oven is off? Will the smells go outside or is there not pulled outside in that case?

If you have a fire going you will be pulling air up the chimney. And the beauty is the smell will be combusted/diluted.
You might be pulling a draft when everything is off but don’t bet on it.

I would think even if when did not have a fire going come summer and if didn’t have a vent that blocks off the draft that it would still rise up high enough to disperse before it got to anyone’s nose level or to be able to track it down. No expert just my thoughts but could also put a sheet of ply wood over fire pit opening during the times of year don’t use just for peace of mind .

Like @Gpaw said only with fire lit will you have a continuos and reliable draw
With the fire out even if there is a draw at the start this is not reliable and a quick change of wind direction or weather would maybe catch you out unknowingly , very risky

also without the added heat of fire and combustion etc the smell may fall to ground level easier quicker outside and be detected closer to your property : )

I’ve had it come out the sewer stack dont ask me how.
Had someone shoveling snow off roof said he smelled it.

It will but unless there is constant downward wind you don’t have anything to worry about. It’s just going to go out the roof and float higher away from ground level and nosey people. My last house I vented out the bathroom roof stack from a unused basement bathroom (not recommended) and I could smell it while I was on the roof but no where else outside.

I wasn’t venting thru sewer stack it just happened.

Oh I believe it, I was just talking about me and I unwisely did. It worked but I was also pushing radon and other unwanted things out of other drains in the house.

my house is the lowest in the village. the end of my chimney is way below the other houses. so smoke potentially goes to the other people.

but how if it smells a lot in my room because of trimming. Will that smell go through the fire so it can be noticed? Or will the fire the smell make disappear?

We heat by a woodstove but this never crossed my mind

Might not be to noticeable mixed with wood smoke

if you have a hot fire it will essentially purify any smells to smoke smell… you could also get a hot fire going and then put in a few green pine needles or other fir tree… it will be pine scented smoke.

If you have no fire going then yeah if you have vents open the smell can be drawn up

yeah seems like the smell will not survive through the fire. So far I couldn’t notice anything.

But still I have the question, when there is no fire, will there be an airflow out of the chimney? Or will there be none?
