Ok OGers. So at what point does collecting seeds, knowing full well chances are you’ll never be able to grow them all out, become an obsession?
I’ve collected 230-250 Auto seeds and can not stop looking at new releases or strains I haven’t had yet. I’m currently in a no grow state but planning on returning to Colorado. At that point , it’s grow on and I’ll start working my way through my bean stash.
Having said that, Is it time for an intervention or am I really just an amateur collector and should continue to add seeds to my collection while stimulating the economy?
I mean I suppose it’s personal preference. I know there’s many many opinions about whether sitting on seeds for decades is right or wrong, but I can tell you the number of folks who wished their forbearers had a secret seed collection with all those devine old crosses right now is way higher than the number who are mad that folks aren’t popping seeds and are (gasp) hoarders.
I don’t sign up for many give aways anymore and I don’t go begging for seeds as I’ve got more than enough to last me for a long time. I won’t turn down seeds that are desirable to me. I also plan to make seeds for handing out or giving away in the future so I guarantee I have more than enough seeds already and probably enough for another generation after me, but gardening in general should be that way. Propagation for the purpose of abundance is how we humans have gotten to where we are and without it we starve so.
So I suppose my short answer is never unless it literally becomes a hoarder situation and you have to travel throughout your living space via pathways carved out of piles of seeds.
Edit I totally failed to answer the question. Sorry. I mean if it isn’t an obsession to collect seeds of various cultivars you must be commercial.
They can actually be used as bartering in the event of a SHTF situation. The world will still need cannabis during the apocalypse. That said, its not hoarding, its prepping right?
I think if you have no plans of popping them then prob to consider trading or doing something else…us growers all have extra genetics laying around but man a couple hundred is a little overboard.
Well, i mean, I’ve seen people pop beans that came back from Vietnam during the war & I doubt those were “stored properly” so there’s always exceptions to the rule, so to speak
But still, seeds do have a general shelf life. ALL seeds, not just our beloved canna
On the topic of properly storing seeds, how do you do it?
I have my seeds in plastic zip locks wrapped and stored in a plastic box that’s kept in the freezer compartment of my kitchen fridge. Is that fine or would the freezer hurt the germ rate?
I’ve got a spot that’s 15C and 40% humidity year round. I keep them on the concrete floor so it’s likely even colder as like a microclimate.
Freezers I don’t really know other than some guys have good success with them. Only thing I can think of is don’t take them out and put them back in regularly because of condensation issues.
