When to cut for cloning?

When do you take your clones from a plant that is not a mother plant, rather one’s you are running to harvest or when pheno hunting at what point in the plants life cycle do you thinks best and why? I take them before flowering and thought that was better since revegging takes time however if it’s your first run then you would not know how it would be in flower of you cut before than, so I am conflicted.

In veg maybe a week after final transplant.

I don’t like touching plants until they show sex. It gives me a personal impression that the sexing process is lengthened and more males are produced

I like to take clones as I trim but my training and trimming routine can be pretty rough for most so I would advise at the latest to pull clones before your flip to flower or a bit before your flip as many would trim and throw away branches at that time anyways

I let them grow until about the 5-6 node and then I top all my plants and save the top for rooting as a clone. I do find this stress sometimes induces their showing sex, which is a bonus in my book.

Otherwise, for taking clones in general (like off a mother), just whenever…

I take them when I need them dont really matter I’ll take all the way up to about a week into the flip. If I had the ideal time it would be when they go crazy in veg

Thank you everyone for your insight.

This is possible :arrow_up::arrow_up::arrow_up:

This is not :arrow_down::arrow_down::arrow_down:

Sex is determined chromosomally. It’s one or the other, and you can test it at the first set of leaves, so environment/ experience doesn’t change it.

Two days into flower :pray: clear out growth inhibitors and speeds rooting

About midway through Veg, I grab them during a good pruning session.

week 3 of flower. at defol.

I take them right before flip. Or right when I get a new clone home if it’s big enough and they usually are.

Now that you mention it… I tried to sneak in some blatant bro science. I was probably very smoked :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

The environment does not influence male or female ratio nor does the temperature or the media in which it is growing nor the light nor the pH nor scarring them nor any of the other bro science tales

The longer into flower you take cuts the longer it takes them to root in my experience. That being said, I have taken cuts 2 weeks into flower before. Use to be a bro science myth that taking them at 21 days of flower gave them rooting vigor. But, i found the exact opposite to be true.
