I’ve been growing about 20 years and recently grew out a beautiful White Rhino. I grew it in a fancy Vivosun Vgrow tent, documented all of it, followed the instructions to the letter. It looked great, huge yield for such a short plant. The weed was awful. No smell, well something extremely faint, sweet maybe? Tastes like nothing, like tasteless. Smokes beautifully, clean as a whistle. There’s no stickiness whatsoever, busts up fluffy. Weird, no smell, no high or rather nothing positive. Muscles feel tight especially in the face, the jaw and brow. Clear head but anxious. There’s no buzz just the heavy feeling of having smoked something. With the exception of the tightness the other feelings disappear quickly.
My White Rhino is from Canuk Seeds. I’ve grown other stuff from them and had good results. I used the Vivosun nutrients for the veg period and switched to my regular nutes for flowering. All good stuff, Holland Secret, West Coast Seaweed Extract, good stuff. Canuk list their White Rhino at 6 weeks flowering. Mine was chopped after 10 weeks. It wasn’t behaving properly. Veg was great, no issues. The first week of flowering everything was normal, it was pumping out flowers and resin, the smell was good and then it stopped. Lots of new leaves and pistils popping but no smell from buds. Lots of pistils and fattening up but they’re not maturing and the resin coverage is sparse. At 6 weeks the whole plant had only a few visible mature pistils, no smell and showed no signs of finishing up anytime soon. I was going by the instructions included with the tent; orange hairs and milky trics but there was nothing yet. The only places on the plant with milky trics were found on the fan leaves on the two smallest fingers closest to the petiole. At 9 weeks it barely matured, lots of new pistils but the old ones hadn’t matured yet and the resin glands were either clear or with just a speck of white. I cut it a week or so later, couldn’t wait any longer and have found a few immature seeds after harvest. It was properly hung, dried and jarred. I have a clone flowering indoors and another couple outside. Any idea where I went wrong?
Canuk Seeds is actually white label, I’ve grown a few of their offerings and found them to be a decent representation of what they said they were.
That said, from what you describe, I blame the genetics and I’ve seen your work so I know you know what you are doing…
10 weeks isnt too long in the grand scheme of things. Some breeders/seed sellers advertise flower times way quicker than they actually are. Although it does seem more like a genetic issue than anything from how you describe it white label companies are generally really hit or miss with quality.
From what I can tell…if anyone has the real rhino from Nirvana late 90s-early aughts ish vintage, they aren’t sharing it. Chances are good it’s aged out and not around anymore.
It was one of my faves as well. That flavor is hard to forget.
FWIW, as far as old school flavors etc are concerned, Bodhi’s Zoot is phenomenal. Good yield too
This probably is just an example of the downside of growing from seed. They are all different “animals” and can express in a lot of ways.
Having said that, nutrient signals are super real and switching nutes coulda have caused a hitch in the operation somewhere, so I’d score that as a distant second possibility.
I grew White Rhino from reg. seeds I got from a seed increase here on OG and it was a big plant easy to grow but was exactly as you described, not a strain I’d grow again.
the cut was for sale on here until about a year ago. I missed getting it by a couple months before they stopped selling it. been pretty ticked off about it.
I just finished smoking JP’s Brain Damage (White Rhino x ATF), really good weed. The male is still sitting in my backyard, refuses to die. It had those resinous fan leaves that smell like the real White Rhino.
Time for a quick update. There were some clones I made from a bunch of suckers. I gave most of them away but there’s still 2 outside and 2 inside. Seeing as the mother plant was bad I paid them no interest. It’s coming up on 6 weeks and something unexpected happened, it turned out normal. Pungent White smell, properly developed buds covered with sticky white resin, fully white. Plenty of orange pistils and that smell, wow. You’d never guess these were cut from the same plant. Oh, and the outdoor clones are all in bud now. It’s got me second guessing everything now.
