Seeds are a roll of the dice every time. You can improve your odds, but well cared for clones are a guaruntee

fems are okay. I dont use them much.
Fems are the reason seeds cost so much.
If everyone started making fems only we would lose all weed and just have weed

Well…this one sure grew legs.
Every day’s a school day, especially here on OG. The reason for my question was a poor assumption on my part, that being that most folks are looking for buds. That’s likely the biggest obvious reason that seed companies sell fems for a higher price. If you’re a home-grower looking to grow a good supply of bud for you and your friends, you want to grow 8 fems, not 4/4 and toss half of them.
I think, as shown by these replies, that there is a much higher percentage of breeders/tinkerers here on OG. Folks have the space and the time to indulge and are often looking for different outcomes, and there’s a MUCH higher percentage of breeders.
So I have a much more realistic understanding of, and appreciation of why people are involved in this hobby and what attracts them to OG.

For me,
Fems = relatively short term. Try taking a line to S5-6 and see how that goes.
Regs = long term. You can take a line to f50 and still have something that can reproduce.
If reg breeding was so terrible, there wouldn’t be a bunch of us nutbars with a shelf full of males, waiting to prove them out. If you get the right male, it can bring so much to a pairing. If you get a king Mitas, it will improve or at least equal every female you pair it with.
Just my observations over the years.

But you could say exactly the same about the right Female ! a good parent is a good parent… male or female.
Fems are harder to reverse and breed with than simply using males, but there are some advantages:
You can evaluate female plants for smoking quality
S1s are more likely to breed true for any given trait because they have essentially been inbred for a generation.
Aside from the fact that it is easier to make seeds with m/f, can anyone state a REAL reason why using males in breeding is better ?

Its not really that hard to make fems. Using colladial takes a little more effort than sts but its not a hard thing to do. Ive never had an issue other than with plants that throw sterile pollen when reversed

You can reverse a male as well. And there are those that do for this exact reason.
