I like the idea of “The # _____ dibs post that shows on my screen wins”.
Making it any number past six or seven would really level the playing field for those with slower connections, especially since people will hold off for a few seconds anyway before posting to hit that winning moment.
Having said that, the battttttttles are fun to watch for sure!
Yep Yep Yep! I spoke with my primary physician yesterday. He said that the way things are looking when you attend the upper level medical marijuana round tables, Missouri could become recreational in the very near future.
When this happens, I don’t know about the rest of the world but, my little corner of the field will be GREEN!
For whatever it’s worth I’m fine with whatever gets decided moving forward. I’ve been involved in and won a couple wiki battles now, they might not be my favorite thing in the world but they are super fun and exciting. The one yesterday came at the perfect time while I was stuck in a 6hour zoom meeting, so I appreciated the distraction. I do see @DougDawson and others points about this causing issues for coop wikis though. But I don’t love the idea of regulating how people choose to giveaway their seeds, might not be how I or others here choose to do it but who are we to stop someone else? Regardless I think that whatever gets decided will be fine as long as the participants in the giveaway approach them with a little bit of graciousness and gratitude were all lucky to be part of a community that places a high value on sharing this way. If the biggest argument we’re having is HOW to give members free stuff then we’re in a good place as a community.
The first thing that came to my mind is the wiki wiki wiki in this tune… Throwback to the 80’s!
I don’t mind the variety, wiki battles, dibs or trivia. Just be clear on the rules, and in the end its your giveaway, so they are your rules… Wiki battles are kinda fun
Pips? I don’t think its a bad thing, it can be gamed if someone goes on a love spree, and works it, but in general it would weed out the fly by night seed snaggers… With 6 pips hopefully you’re participating in some capacity…
Nothing, but the way the battle works, thats not the best strategy… That WILL be overwritten by everybody else. I found after adding my name to a few versions of the list, others edits would naturally include my name, and sometimes its overwritten. In one wiki battle I didnt need to hit edit for 6 minutes and my name was coming and going as others had it in their edit que then. In the end, its random, nobody knows exactly when it closes, so its luck of the draw (though you could close it randomly between say 8 and 10 minutes and give out even more anxiety and make it even more random, than everybody clicking save at the 10 min mark and last man standing wins).
Maybe, but not really based on my own experience… I mean, my name was being edited in, because someone else was editing the wiki and added their name in a different slot not overwriting mine. My name came and went without me doing a thing after I made a few edits, then its like a slot machine really. I don’t think anybody has an advantage honestly… Trivia and Dibs the faster connections have an advantage, but there is a decent amount of random factors to a wiki battle that nobody gets an advantage if you ask me. You could make 1 edit and end up on the final list, or make 30 edits and get nothing…
Rules should be clearly stated though, either its thunderdome style, anything goes, whats on the list at times up is what stands, if its 1 name in 10 spots, or 10 names. OR only 1 spot per name, multiple spots = DQ. As long as the game starter clearly states what IS allowed, my only concern would be server load at that point.
This is really the only negative I see… It reinforces a behaviour we are trying to correct in other, more organized wiki sign ups. And the potential for confusion, especially for newer users (can I overwrite this wiki?) needs to be considered for sure…
BUT are you over 6’ tall??
You showed em the secret! lol. I been cut n pasting my edits every week. CTRL+A then CTRL+V… BUT. I have other names in the list, not my name in all spots. Surprised @Slick1 with a win one week that he didn’t know he was in the battle for LOL.
I disagree here. I could make one edit, taking my sweet time, putting names in each spot, and if I am lucky and click overwrite just a millisecond before it closes, I win. Cutting and pasting saved me effort, but I dont think it gives an advantage when the player has no control over when the wiki closes, even if they know its “10 minutes”, there’s a lot of potential variation to the EXACT moment it closes with LOTS of edits in play…
showoff! LOL
Dude… WHY?!? Just… WHY!!! I wouldn’t even use them for fertilizer, much less wanna win them!!!
hater
I think its a misunderstanding thats lost in translation. You letting him know seeds havent arrived, and it was perceived as complaining that they haven’t arrived. I know the USPS has been SHIT lately, I ship a lot of ebay stuff, and its PURE SHIT. Stuff travelling just in the US takes forever, go over a border? Easily can be a month or more… And I have had stuff not show up, or show up damaged and missing the seeds. But ya can’t complain, the sender was generous and its not their fault. Not that I think you were complaining, you were just letting him know the beans hadn’t landed. But just a little etiquette is to never kick a gift horse in the mouth, aka don’t complain when someone is being generous to you (and again, I’m feeling more miscommunication, than complaining here)…
you are WAY overthinking this. Edit one wiki. CTRL+A / CTRL+C copies everything in the edit window. Then just CTRL+V to paste. LOL Multiple browsers open? LOL I work on 4 screens, easily done but I see no benefit, much quicker to edit and force the overwrite in one screen. Theres nothing “inherent to the bbs” that would hold anybody from writing to the wiki. You all have the ability to edit, get a warning that it was edited, and then overwrite the edit. last man to click overwrite before wiki is closed is the lucky one…
I have seen a number of TL2 only giveaways lately… So that group is certainly not being left out…
thats like 2.5 cents, your 0.5 cents over!!
I can’t argue that… It is fun… But I can see the impact. Its not even “potential impact”, on legit signups theres always that accidental overwrite… it happens, and reinforcing it doesnt make it happen any less. But its still fun… if there was only a way to “separate” the motions, so to speak… I can’t think of anything…
Cause I ain’t greedy. Plain and simple. I added other members names, JohnnyP or Slick1, and when I noticed another jersey guy playing, I added his name to my “cut n paste” list. nobody NEEDS 10 packs, or even 5 packs. Of the same strain? c’mon, I know we’re better than that…
====NOTE====
JESUS, I still have 12 hours to catch up on, and I’ve got this friggen book written!
====NOTE====
OK!! that read to me like you sent him a pair and are requesting he return them in said condition. Poor choice of words, you REALLY need to be specific when dealing with @Slick1 and tell him to remember, he’s a brown-noser, so put the BROWN to the NOSE (sorry for the diversion folks)
I’m torn honestly, I can see some people having a bad habit of hitting overwrite, just being reinforced, but I can see it showing someone how a wiki is edited and what happens when ya overwrite, since overwriting IS the central theme. But I agree, they ARE a lot of fun… Ya just cant be so vested you cry if you lose, and don’t be a dick and take every spot… then everyone has fun… it IS a game after all, someones gotta lose LOL
DOH! (imagining @Slick1 sniffin big mikes undies). Dude, thats NOT the way I wanted to end my post…
Jesus, FINALLY caught up… dang ya miss a lot in 12 hours!
I was just thinking the same thing about my 16 hours, then you decided to post this wall of text. Nah, I caught up a little bit last night, but was too beat to weigh in on this one. From what I saw, the particular wiki battle that inspired this discussion was run by @corey, who is obviously generous to a fault… definite karma points there. I did notice that he ran several wiki battles in a row, and didn’t actually spell out that any of them were intended to be wiki battles as opposed to just normal signup. I think that’s the real issue here, not running them in the first place - but running them in such a way that people might think battles are the rule, not the exception. The ones that I watched going, even though I wasn’t participating, I would’ve been confused if I wanted to; wiki went up with the giveaway, no rules posted, and some indeterminate amount of time later when @corey got back it was shut down. It’s awesome running the giveaways, especially for newer members who find themselves without seeds, and he should be able to do giveaways however he wants… but there’s no denying that it can be confusing for some. It’s a pickle. I guess I think that, as long as the rules are clearly spelled out and it’s clear that it is a wiki battle and unlike most wikis, it should be ok. There’s much more potential for confusion if the rules aren’t spelled out from the get-go.
It seems to me that the biggest problem w coop wiki over-writes stems from a lack of awareness. I genuinely think people just are not sure what the correct answer is when they get the overwrite warning. One solution may be to put a big banner right next to where one signs up for a coop run, stating that overwrites on coop sign-ups are not allowed and can lead to disqualification?
I understand the concern of wiki battles spilling over and leading to more over-writes in the coops. But I guess I’m of the mind that wiki battles also increase newer members awarenss of what an overwrite is and does. So, it potentially could lead to less confusion.
i had a similar thought to this. could makeup color coded headers for coop wikis and wiki battle giveaways and store them on a thread for people to copy/paste when they want to start one or the other, that way there are standardized, printed rules that are already written out, as well as an identifier of what you’re trying to get started. could be more work than its worth but definitely an option if we’re searching for solutions.
That’s not what this is about at all. Nobody is regulating anything, just asking opinions. There are 2 sides to this. Those who feel it causes issues and those who dont. Whether people choose to address or ignore the other sides concerns is totally up to each individual. Grow on OG, it’s going to be a beautiful day.
totally hear you doug, just wanted to clarify no malice or accusation intended on my part, just sharing my 2 cents. i appreciate you bringing up the concern in the first place i wouldn’t have considered the potential negative effects to the coop signup wikis if you hadn’t. We’re lucky to have a generous, considerate and concerned individual like yourself in our ranks.
Thanks bud and I have no malice towards anyone here no matter their position. All opinions are valid and welcome. Thats one of the great things about OG, open discussion is welcomed and encouraged. Have a great day bud.
I never though this being a problem for a co-op unless the slots are full and the person then decides to edit themselves in the wiki before it is closed.
Hey @bunny , I have personally seen it many times as I am sure you will once you have been here longer. It’s all good, folks seem very focused on this one type of giveaway for some reason even though thousands have happened without utilizing this method. I like many have voiced our concerns and that’s all we can do. Time to agree to disagree and move on IMO.
I can’t add everybodys name, sorry… And the people I added appreciated the thought. You enter the game knowing you are owed nothing, and its a random act of kindness and generousity. If my name isn’t on the list and someones is in all 10 spaces, it is what it is, I’d know who was more greedy. I wouldn’t bitch that I didnt win and they took all 10 spaces. ya never win em all… I wouldn’t put my name in 10 spaces, but it was still funny as hell to see it. And ya gotta know that edit will not return to the screen unless YOU make it return, others edits are gonna cut you out. theres different strategies and the most obvious ones suck. But in the end its a game, if the rules state only 1x on the list, more and you get disqualified, well, let the game master enforce the rule, but announce it first… I’d rather see 10 people get 10 packs instead of all to one person for sure. But kinda enjoy seeing people put their name in 10 spots, then get called out when the whole wiki is wiped and a message is sent to them on the wiki by another user, then the wiki is back and battle continues. That was funny as hell…
