Banks still hold gold they’re just more corrupt for greed.
What’s going on (debt, inflation) is from corruption, inefficiency, low trust, low education, wars all kind of go together.
Diving deeper into this becomes more political than historical philosophical unfortunately.

Gold was the best asset I every bought and held on to.
My financial advisor, hated me for my gold buying, he called it rat holing.
because it was NOT going to into his investment vehicles, offered by Met Life, and other corrupt entities.
I held the bare minimum of his assets for the tax breaks, and rat holed every cent I could spare, into gold. Well and silver.
Fuck that guy hated me, and I loved every second we did battle in his office.
He did not make squat on what I parked at his firm, and just grated on him.
