Zigzag stems was never something i paid attention to throughout the years. In more recent times, the more lines i hunted for keepers the more specimens making top 10 within a line or eventually being the one i keep shared this very specific trait.
Melon lifesaver x 88g13hp (2/4)
Ssk12
Ssk12 x 88g13hp (2/4)
Cheese (2/2)
Skunk (2/8, keeper does it)
Etc
Some circulated clones consistently do it
Deathstar
Chem91
Chem d
Chem sis
Exodus cheese
Apollo 11
Genius
Ai pics
Etc
Id like to compile a list of cuts known to zigzag, along with a list of pools/strains where this trait is common.
A second aspect would logically be to try to understand why does that happen? Where does this originate from/is this tied to a region or specific genepool? Is it linked to something beneficial at all or pure happenstance?
Right away, anything to do with structural components(leaf/branch angle, nolulation etc) is often linked to hornomes, auxin/cytokinin ratio specifically.
Plants suffering from phosphate deficiency will tend to have acute branch angles, keeping limbs close to the main stem in an attemp to shade itself.
With sufficient pi, branches will tend to grow away from the stem to soak up the sun.
Its possible zig zagging serves a similar purpose, offsetting nodes to expose the most leaf surface to direct sun. In which case, it would be positive and a sign of high efficiency.
Funnily enough i bred melon hashplant to perform well in sog, including short limbs growing upright.
Am i selecting for rejects?!
That, and more, on the next episode of why am i like this.
They all get alternating leaves at nodes when they reach sexual maturity, but definitely had a few in the past that zigged and zagged noticeably more than others. I never put to much thought into it. I just figured it’s part of natural variation.
