Zigzag stems

Zigzag stems was never something i paid attention to throughout the years. In more recent times, the more lines i hunted for keepers the more specimens making top 10 within a line or eventually being the one i keep shared this very specific trait.

Melon lifesaver x 88g13hp (2/4)
Ssk12
Ssk12 x 88g13hp (2/4)
Cheese (2/2)
Skunk (2/8, keeper does it)
Etc

Some circulated clones consistently do it
Deathstar
Chem91
Chem d
Chem sis
Exodus cheese
Apollo 11
Genius
Ai pics
Etc

Id like to compile a list of cuts known to zigzag, along with a list of pools/strains where this trait is common.

A second aspect would logically be to try to understand why does that happen? Where does this originate from/is this tied to a region or specific genepool? Is it linked to something beneficial at all or pure happenstance?

Right away, anything to do with structural components(leaf/branch angle, nolulation etc) is often linked to hornomes, auxin/cytokinin ratio specifically.

Plants suffering from phosphate deficiency will tend to have acute branch angles, keeping limbs close to the main stem in an attemp to shade itself.

With sufficient pi, branches will tend to grow away from the stem to soak up the sun.

Its possible zig zagging serves a similar purpose, offsetting nodes to expose the most leaf surface to direct sun. In which case, it would be positive and a sign of high efficiency.

Funnily enough i bred melon hashplant to perform well in sog, including short limbs growing upright.

Am i selecting for rejects?!

That, and more, on the next episode of why am i like this.

For those of us that are a tad dense…
Please explain.

A zigzag stem is one where one knot to the next will angle to the left, and the next set will lean to the right, creating a thunder bolt like stem.

Cool thread idea :+1:

I’m fairly certain Lemon G does this too. Tomorrow I’ll try to remember to take a pic when I’m in the tent.

Always thought zig zag stem was because the plant was mature sexually and alternating nodes as it prepares for flower. All my clones are like this

I thought all clones ending up with alternating nodes.

They all get alternating leaves at nodes when they reach sexual maturity, but definitely had a few in the past that zigged and zagged noticeably more than others. I never put to much thought into it. I just figured it’s part of natural variation.

The stem itself has a pronounced zigzag

Without naming the guy, dank.frank takes notice of zigzag stems when sorting chem crosses for chem leaners for exemple.

I see that. I have a few clone plants that have more pronounced zig zags than others. I don’t recall chems being super zig zagging though

Reminds me of a pic I generated with A.I. before a few years back

Had to dig to find it, was in the Mazar repro thread.

My Hubbabubbasmelloscope x Skystomper 2.0 freebie auto is a heavy zig-zagger especially higher up the stem, bit hard to tell with the photos, sorry
