Ancestral Skunk "Bonsai" that got out of control

Around February of this year I started an ancestral skunk in a bonsai pot and here is a photo journey of the progress. Been 12 weeks since I flipped to 12/12, last pic is from 2 days ago.

Damn. That’s an impressive plant even if in a normal container! What is the volume of media? Soil, or coco? And how do you keep up with watering, she on a dripper or something?

Thanks for the kind words. This plant has been a huge surprise to me. The pot is just under 0.75 gallons by my calculators. When I planted this I was still using Roots brand Organic Original Soil (Perlite, Coco Fiber, Peat Moss). It required water every single day and at some stages twice a day. It’s really hard to believe this all came out of a small pot.

On a side note… I had taken some clones off this to give to friends and one never left my tent. It sat there neglected in a solo cup forever. I was gona toss it out but couldn’t bring myself to do it so I just threw it in the flower tent. This solo cup one was UGLY but its turning out beautiful. See photo below, still in a solo but the styrofoam cup as a holder gives me something to weigh it down with. This was a couple weeks ago, the buds are huge now on the solo cup.

Very impressive bonsai. Any plans on reveging her?

I love what you have done here. It looks amazing! Growing succefully in very small containers shows your true skills with plants! Maybe we should bring back the 1sq challange :v:t2:

I had a solo Cup(300 ml water volume) too,I was blown away from what you can do with Coco coir and perlite. But I am no master at all.
Your skill Is portrayed by the bonsai you did,It is WONDERFUL,kudos friend❤️

We do solo cup challenges fairly often. Seems we see about due for a new one.

I’ve seen this done a few times and it’s always caught my attention. I may have to try this as soon as a tent clears up. You did a great job! good looking plant.

Funny you should mention that, I was just debating that this morning. I have looked into the process a bit but never tried it from a harvested plant. The basic Idea is to cut all the branches down to the last set of flowers and then just leave those last lower buds and put under 18 to 24 hours of light… right?

While this particular Skunk plant seems sensitive in some ways, it’s extremely talented in others. I think its pros are obvious with bud size, growing in small containers, loves being bent, etc. But when I cloned this plant all the clones started to flower in the cloner. It could have been my fault but no other plants did this to me. So the solo cup and all other clones I had went through a reveg process and boy does that make some weird growth. But in the end even the clones are doing well and I actually learned so many things from this one plant and it’s clones. My buddies that got clones from this bonsai said they are really tall and still growing taller. I know I chopped a 3ft tall clone (in half gallon pot) down to less than 2 feet and it grew right back up.

Thanks buddy! I would LOVE to participate in a solo cup challenge. I have read some of the old threads and it looks like fun.

I wish I could say this was a success because of some skill I have, but probably more luck. I am constantly doing experiments and usually screwing up so a win is nice. I will have to post some of the torture I have done to Kush plants lately. Still haven’t gotten a graft to work but I am not giving up.

Thank you for the praise, the plant did most of the work, I just reacted to my bad decisions haha.

Let’s do it! I don’t have the experience to run it but I would love to participate.

I highly recommend it! Very fun and keeps me busy in the grow room when there isn’t much else to do. Stops me from over tending my others. But now that I went from 1 tent to 4 tents seems I am always busy in the garden. I do have a second bonsai of King Tut that I attempted a “root over rock” look and its ok. I will be pruning that one soon and I will post a thread about its life. I hope to repot it into a slightly larger round bonsai pot as the end goal is to have a mother bonsai with a bunch of strains grafted to it. So far all graft attempts have failed. Maybe I should consider a different strain for the host plant.

Yeah, i love the 1sq/ft challange on icmag. It sucks that it didnt continued. It would be awesome If we could get a challange like that going here on OG aswell :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

@Greenup Doing experiments are how you get better! You are probably a better grower then you think!

I chopped down the bonsai today. It didn’t want to drink and all the leaves curled long ways. All hairs are brown and a couple buds were almost crispy on the very edges. Might have been past its prime. Or maybe just perfect! a day shy of 13 weeks.

But rather than chop the whole plant I left the last few buds at the bottom and I will attempt a reveg. Not expecting it to work for some reason. I do want to put it in a round bonsai pot. I assume I should wait for 2-4 weeks to let it reveg before changing pots. Let me know if you have other opinions or advice.

Check it @Rhino_buddy thanks for all the help and support along the way. Thanks @Sebring for the wonderful skunk preservation. Many others, too many to name. Can’t wait to try this.

For now I will leave you with some photos cause I gotta go chop two more and set up the dry tent.

Amazing work my friend. Im very impressed by your results. I think its cool that you almost let It die at the end. This is how old school hashish was made. When the winter came, every crop would self dry and die. After that it was harvested and dried so some. This made it easier for trichs to fall of when the stems was smacked against a wood rail.

Dig the bonsai style man. Thanks for sharing. You took that one all the way! I will be amazed at the reveg!

I really appreciate the kind words. This was a fun experiment that got me thinking about a lot of things I thought I knew but realized I have no clue.

Thanks Cbizzle, Glad you enjoyed checking it out. I have several more bonsais going that I can’t wait to show the community but they aren’t quite ready for a photoshoot.

For those wondering about the solo cup forgotten clone of this bonsai… it’s still kicking ass some how.

Updated photos of solo cup skunk, it has been 50 days since flip to 12/12. Any guesses on final dry weight of this solo harvest? Hoping for a half ounce but it might even produce more!

The Ancestral Skunk Bonsai produced 62g (2.2oz) of dried/cured buds for those wondering. The solo cup skunk will be harvested soon.

Did this require nutrients? I was thinking of doing something similar with some extra seeds I have. I have living soil but I dont want to purchase more nutrients than the buildabloom that I already have

This was before I was growing organic. The solo cup did get a little bit of synthetic nutrients in some waterings. But very little. The soil was a premade mix, probably something from Royal Gold so it had some nutrients in the soil. The bonsai did get regular synthetic nute feedings but I am growing other bonsais now with living organic soils.

For a solo cup you could always just leave some room at the top of the cup and top dress in some of your dry nutrients you already have. Or just use your nice built up living soil for this solo grow and see how it does. Experiments are fun! I say go for it. I was shocked on what this did with little to no nutrients.
