Cheap LED Strips : A Viable Alternative

Anyone using the 2 foot strips in a 2 foot tent?

It looks like the strips are 22 inches so they should just barely fit with a small frame, but wondering if anyone has actually done it?

Yep they’ll fit

This has me super paranoid now lol I’m just going to do frequent inspections of the wiring and any potential chafe area’s.

Only you can prevent grow tent fires!

two things every grow needs

a smoke detector and a fire extinguisher

be safe

Do people put smoke detectors in their tents? Just got me thinking this reading your response @dequilo.

Great idea bro! I have an alarm on the door but neither a detector or an extinguisher. That Shed would burn down in minutes. I would have to let it burn for a bit to destroy everything before the Fire Dept and Cops get here!

very good question  I think more as room as I do not use a tent

I do have one in my room and it will phone me if there is a problem

all the best

I’ve got one in my basement where the tent is. I also have a fire extinguisher down there . The one that notifies you sounds interesting, does it run off of Wi-Fi?

I just changed out the detectors throughout my house and the CO Monitor. can be costly depending on the quantity that you may have? I did it because the room I use for my grow had a detector that was suspect and if you change one, logic dictates, you got to change em’ all! or at least I would need too, just to sleep better at night, I got burnt one time, that shit ain’t fun, not one little bit!

I use a Nest Protect which runs off wifi.

I keep one of those in my grow room :+1:

Also, I just picked up another auto fire guard.

https://www.amazon.com/Automatic-Fire-Extinguisher-Ball-Stand/dp/B079VVWHCP

These extinguishers work automatically so you don’t need to be present for a fire if it happens.

I have one next to each of my tents. They have given me some peace of mind.

What @nube said. I often see this being overlooked when discussing these builds. I am a qualified electrician and I would always wire it as the voltage of a single strip and parallel them. Sure it is more wire and harder to wire but a hell of a lot safer. When you take into account the “noob” status of a lot of the people requesting this info. The lowest voltage should always be king. You may have to do some series wiring if you have super low voltage strips or cobs etc but I would keep it to a minimum.

The industry standard says 60V DC to be ‘safe’. See http://www.ecma-international.org/publications/standards/Ecma-287.htm Table 3.1 on page 25.

Thanks @nube and @ReikoX for the responses. Those are consequences i had not even considered. $50000+ of possible loss in case of fire Is plenty of reason for me to go with a high current driver.

Compatibility…
Am I ok to wire parallel for 10 of the 560mm Eb Gen3 strips on the above driver?

Info above on series vs parallel much appreciated. Initially planned serial.

XLG-150-L-AB has an output voltage of 120-214V. The 560mm strips have a nominal voltage of 19V. The short conclusion is: no, it is not possible to wire them all in parallel.

You need at least 120/19 = 6.3 strips in series to get to the minimum voltage of your driver.
Only the XLG-150-24-A(B) is capable of powering them in parallel because it has an output voltage range of 16.8-24V.

The driver spec is linked in post 811 and the led spec is linked in post 65

Unfortunately you need to figure out the wiring configuration you want first and purchase a driver to suit. If you already have the driver then you are stuck with the configuration you originally chose. You will be fine. Just ensure you insulate everything properly and protect any cabling that might rub on the frame. If you dont already have the driver then I would consider a redesign. It will cost a little more in wire and will be a little bit harder to connect them all together but will be a lot safer for wet environments.

Much appreciated @Phozah @BudSy

Another noob coming up to speed on led tech.
Wiring them up serial as originally planned.
I’m comfortable with the building, and wiring. And for sure I will be anal with elec. insulation.

Future builds I can get jiggy with a proper parallel design.

For sure. I will continue jumping in your thread and checking out how your grows go. I think you will be pretty stoked with the outcome.

I saw someone talking about far red, IR, and UV but I’ll be dammed if I can remember where. Wish I could find it again for where they sourced the strips or cobs from. Anyone know a good source for those?
