Itâs important to note not only what the law says, but what it also implies and how it will be enforced. While itâs still restrictive, the fact that you wonât do jail time for possession is a HUGE change for the better. It wasnât long ago that states had to put even medical on a ballot, since no legislature in this country was willing to even consider loosening restrictions. In 1996, California became the first state to allow medical cannabis. Everybody who was anybody in politics was adamantly opposed to it. Pretty soon, a bunch of states went medical without much opposition. Finally, in 2012, Colorado and Washington became the first states to go recreational, and you better believe it met a lot of resistance. Now, 21 states are full recreational. Whatâs happening now sucks, but it will change. Attitudes are changing a lot. Cannabis became legal in many places, and those places didnât descend into anarchy and chaos, a fact that even the most ardent prohibitionist cannot deny. Any arguments against legalization are vacuous (if not outright false) and perfunctoryâŚand everyone knows it.
Just be patient and ever vigilant. Prohibition will end, and it will rightfully be on the wrong side of history.
