Yesss… thank you!
It was sad news last week when I heard this. I’m a fan and have met him a couple of times. My family has a connection to him and I ended up with a ton of memorabilia over the years. I created a Kinky Friedman commemorative “rain room” (how he referred to the bathroom in his books) with an uncut book cover, concert poster, a poster from his run for sheriff in 1986, and a 45 rpm single. I have autographed first editions of most of his books too.
He was quite the character and lived a full life (spent 2 years with the Peace Corps in Borneo, toured with Bob Dylan’s Rolling Thunder Revue, got 16% of the vote when he ran for governor of Texas, mystery novelist, turned his family’s ranch into a no-kill shelter for dogs, etc.). Some of his songs are offensive on the surface, but he was doing that to make people think. I love his story of smoking Cuban cigars with Bill Clinton (when they were illegal), saying that he wasn’t supporting their economy - he was burning their fields!
RIP, Kinkster!!
