Cheap LED Strips : A Viable Alternative

Here’s a thought I had a couple weeks back while looking at my big light…
(2 drivers powering 10 strips ea.) what if I used a different CCT strip, say… 5,000 kelvin?

You could significantly very the combined spectrum…
LOL sort of a solution looking for a problem…

yeah gen 3’s apart from the thrives all are better efficiency wise and the same, just that the HO “high output” have double chips, so in essence there two regulars strips in one and just run at double the amperage.

Th cost of one of those strips is less than buying two strips of the gen 2’s.

example Gen 2’s 560mm strip “ds131” is $6.67cnd a strip if you buy under 50qty with 2390lm output at 175lm/w efficiency for say a 3500k 80cri strip

the Gen 3 HO 560mm strip “ds134” is $10.97cnd a strip if you buy over 10qty and is 4960lm output with 185lm/w efficiency for a 3500k 80cri strip

So more light, more efficiency, less cost, less parts, with a need for a bit of heatsinking, sounds like a win to me.

… im running split spectrum on mine, 3500k mains with a couple of hotter thrives strips for color accuracy of photos and better to look at for my eyes, there no where near as good for growing but meh choices wanted to try them been maybe over a year now.

I got a graphic example of color accuracy last night…

I have packs to colored tie-wraps I use for plant ID. I was running low on options so I grabbed the lime green. I cannot tell the difference between lime green and yellow in the tent. Outside, no problem! :vulcan_salute:

oh forsure the yellow overcast blends alot of colors, thus why i tried some thrives mixed in, definitely makes looking at the plants easier on the eyes.

Just wanted to come back to this thread and thank @Mr.Sparkle as well as everyone else on this thread. Also I’d like to show how viable these lights actually are.
They’ve been working smoothly for me so far. I’m on week 6 of flower with a deadhead of f2 from norstar.

@anon85454369 check octopart with the product number in question, you may find a couple other retailers and i think futureelectronics has quite a few branches in europe and if im placing your rough location wrong they have a branch in Stockholm and Gothenberg.

but they may not do less than bulk orders on some strips.

Thank you stockholm it is I think 5-6 strips is about right for a kickass light

yeah future may only sell in 20+ quantities for what they do carry so may be left with a digikey order if going the diy route.

Yeah you need to buy 20 but they are half the price OMG. Head exploded

just make sure your reading the correct part number is all as you may be looking at the non HO gen 3’s, also consider digikey does the price drop with volume aswell you just have to look at the price points on the side of the product page.

Just got my eb2 strips ordered. I went with the 1120mm model. This will be for my 2x4 veg tent.

Do I need to get thermal tape or is everyone using the m3 screws and rubber washers? I have some wagos leftover and should just need the fasteners and a little more angled aluminum.

Also @Gpaw is there a way to test my qb120 boards. They were wired in series if that matters. I’d just like to know if one or all are bad. If only one is bad I can make three small lights for another project.

I used metal bolts nuts and washers , stainless steel ones left over from a different project , should I redo them with rubber washers ??? Also should I Earth the metal structure of the light ???

@Gpaw : )
