I read that the term “piss poor” was from when people saved thier pee to sell to the tanner for tanning hides. People that “don’t have a pot to piss in” were even poorer. Dirt floors were normal and wheat thresh was used on there to keep the dust down, hence the word "threshold " at the door .

I always understood that neckties became popular when shirts with buttons down the front became popular. The idea was that buttons were irregular and the necktie was a way to cover the irregularity of the buttons. I was mistaken.

I believe that that’s due to the meat packing industry.
