Each of these photographs has a short narrative story about the animal in the photo. I found this description particularly fascinating. I had no idea a polar bear could track and kill a reindeer!

“The Grinch, a polar bear with a distinctive character, rests. Ledoux explains: “She had a predictable routine. Each evening she would wake up, stretch, make her way to the ice edge and chase walruses off the ice. That night her playful spirit extended to the birds which she chased with boundless energy, running around simply for the joy of it. As dusk settled in, The Grinch decided it was time to hunt. Leaving the ice behind, she would head towards the hills, where her keen senses guided her to track reindeer. Within a few hours, she typically caught her reindeer, ensuring she had a substantial meal before resting. Satisfied and full, she would find a quiet spot to sleep, only to wake up the next evening and repeat her routine.””

We take refrigerated food for granted. That wasn’t always the case. Upton Sinclair’s “The Jungle” was released in 1905, just six years before this banquet, and apparently people were basically scared shitless about new food technologies.

This is the menu for the first “cold storage banquet” ever given. Note how most of the courses include which cold storage facility it had been housed in. It is unclear to me if the mashed potatoes, demi-tasse, and cigars were kept in cold storage.

For those interested in the history of modern food, this is a pretty cool article. Not surprisingly, in the end the feast wasn’t about food safety at all, but rather a PR stunt which, based on our lives today, worked amazingly well!

Something I know for absolute certain is, unfortunately, my eyesight is bad enough that I’m unable to read the list, and I’ll just bet there’s a whole bunch of stuff on there that I don’t know! Dadgumit!
