For a period of time in the late 1970’s I took one of the earliest windsurfers (like an aircraft carrier!) to the S. Pacific. I actually delivered mail from the nearest ‘main’ island to one or two of the ‘outer’ islands in a small backpack! 
Windsurfer was 10’-12’ feet long and 3’ wide, pretty easy to stay on!
Wait a sec, are you saying you & your people were the characters from the beach? 
Sweet! Never read the book but the movie was decent.
Well, there was a lot of ‘creative license’ taken and he had a storyline/plot of his own in mind, but for anybody that was there it’s pretty easy to pick out the cast of characters!
