I got to have all your love night and day, cuz ninety nine and a half won’t do, no, it just won’t do…
And, in my opinion, a pretty great cover…
Sam Cooke is my very favorite Soul/RB vocalist.
Another tragic young death, shot by a motel manager in 1964, 33 years old.
I am NOT a country and western music fan - but this, this is scripture … From Turtles All The Way Down.
Every time I take a look
Inside that old and fabled book
I’m blinded and reminded of
The pain caused by some old man in the sky
Marijuana, LSD
Psilocybin, and DMT
They all changed the way I see
But love’s the only thing that ever saved my life
So don’t waste your mind on nursery rhymes
Or fairy tales of blood and wine
It’s turtles all the way down the line
So to each their own 'til we go home
To other realms our souls must roam
To and through the myth that we all call space and time
For several decades following Sam’s death, this, his last (posthumous) hit, was unavailable because of contractual disputes (read assholes arguing about who should get the money). Then, maybe 25 years ago, the issues ended and the song was once more available to the public. Thankfully. For all his earlier hits and misses, which I love, for me this one brings it all home.
IMO, probably the best compilation of Sam’s work is this 4 disc collection, The Man Who Invented Soul. It’s not complete, however. It does not include, for example, A Change Is Gonna Come, as well as a few other minor hits. For most folks, however, it and this post’s song will cover all the bases.
Gonna be a dark, dreary, cold rain mixed with ice pellets with no sun what-so-ever day… so I might as well set the mood:
