Chubby Checker’s cover of the Hank Ballard penned song is the only song to be a number one hit on the Billboard charts in two non-consecutive years. The geezer’s here may remember just how weird that was, hearing the exact same song as a #1 hit basically a year after it had been a hit.

I heard Hank Ballard interviewed once and he said the first time he heard the cover, he thought it was his own recording being played on white radio! He was in a tunnel when the “new” song was being introduced, and didn’t realize it was a cover. I’ve listened to both a whole lot of times and I can’t really tell a difference.
