Any Audiophiles Out There?

I’m not sure how I arrived at the decision, but I bought a pair of HUGE speakers for my main entertainment system. It’s kind of ridiculous how big they are, but boy do I love the sound! They are JBL Studio 590s. For music listening, the dual 8" woofers put out plenty of low end, but for home theater use the addition of a subwoofer completes the experience. I’ve run a Polk and a Klipsch sub at different times. I almost talked myself out of the speaker upgrade due to cost but am so glad I followed through because I derive a great deal of joy listening to that system.

Know where your coming from on that. I recently shifted on an old set of Grado SR80i that i originally got for going out and about. Lightweight and easy to drive off an iphone etc. Sounded pretty poor to me though.I even tried my desktop amp with them but got no real improvement. The guy who bought them loves them though so i must have been spoiled from years of listening to decent rigs. Had loads of cans over the years and headphone amps too including a valve one. Some stood out but to my taste the best i have had to date is those AKG’s with my home made headphone amp. It’s also one of the cheaper rigs I’ve owned but i did get those cans at a very good price. Got lucky on an ebay auction, the things were in mint condition complete with both cables and black velvet bag.

You tried a listen to - Learning To fly off the Echoes remaster. It’s pretty stunning through a good rig :+1:

I’m not going to start on separates, turntables, speakers, high end diy etc cos we could be at that for years

Ok so after 3-4 sessions at 2-3 hours long…It’s not for me, the Sennheisor 280 Pro.
It’s flat to a fault. Almost like it’s muted! Also the sound stage is non-exsitant. The low end is muted more so than the minds and highs. Every now and then they punch through but not often.

Giving them to my dad for Fathers Day while I keep digging.

Haven’t used them with a amp yet, only mobile devices. Not sure how much of a differ it would make.?.
And finally they are a bit tight on your head.

Probably need to look at the $150-$200 range.

They may be wrong ohms ie to high so not sensitive . A phone headphone socket is not same as one on a mixer or amp etc so maybe try a differing source.

I think it somewhere around 60 ohms…I could try my receiver but most listening will be on monkey/mobile devices.

Apple for instance likes to be 50 ohms maximum , so the higher you go the quieter they are

These are supposed to be ok…They come in 3-4 differ ohm levels, 32, 80, 400. Prob go with the 32 and get a small headphone amp. It’s 15% off from the manufacturer, reg price $149.

Like I say before the DT100’s are best imho I’ve used them around mastering , studios and live work and the are awesome just get the right spec

They look nice! But 400 ohms is a problem for me as they will not have a amp all the time.

Be good to hear how you get on with the DT 770. I almost bought a set a few years back after being nagged about sound leakage. Got the AKG K712 pro instead, a very good compromise imo

They do a 16 ohm pair also here a link use the drop down to select. They are the flattest response going

Well I settled on a set but I may have made a mistake, not sure yet. I had it nailed down to three and picked the right set but forgot about the reviews, lol. :anguished:
Most ppl are happy with them until the headband breaks…!?

They’re quite nice and responsive and hard wearing. There is a big difference beteween the 770s, 880s and 990s.

I have the Sennheiser HD600s and I use these recommended EQ settings as a preset on the master out of my DAW. Makes for more accurate mixes… Sennheiser HD600.pdf (313.9 KB)

I read a lot of good reviews on the Senn 600. It was outta my range though. So I just went with the Shure cans instead, almost got the 777 but didn’t.
Here is a site in Cali that makes and builds amps, dac, etc…Prices are pretty good to.

I was reading about these when you posted. I have only had Shure earbuds, but they were amazing coming out of a Rane TTM mixer. I have had several sets of their phonographic needles and used many other sets belonging to friends and they are the standard for scratching. Recently, Howard Stern has fallen in love with his Shure headphones too. I’m considering a better review on my AKG Q’s too since they are the 700 series essentially. Thanks guys.

Choices are almost endless but after many years of box swapping i eventually went diy for amplification and never looked back. For anything i cant or wont build myself i prefer specialist companies, AKG, Sennheiser, Beyer etc for cans. My current DAC is from Cali, an HRT music streamer 3.

I hope you get on well with the Shure cans, need to treat them with care by the look of it. I rarely buy new cans, bought and sold quite a few sets over the years on ebay, even turned a profit on a set of HD650s once. Spares like new cushion pads etc are easy to get for decent cans. Also headphones can take a lot of breaking in, 200hrs in some cases before they sing. My AKG’s had only been used a few times before the guy decided they were not suitable for use with his mixing desk. I got a bargain though at just over half price for a mint set :+1:

Shure should stick to microphones lol. The choices chosen in their description alluded to they not play flat which was the original specified question.

So far the Shure’s have held up well. They haven’t had a easy life either…Dropped, sat on, burnt (luckily just on the bottom of the band) no issues so far.

I replaced the original ear cup pads, they started hurting after two hours or so. Put these pads on and holy crap, a world of difference!

They are a little $$ but worth it!

The amp from Schiit didn’t make a huge differ. The CS was pretty crappy with me, so I’ll move on.

Looking for a phono amp now and a dac but phono amp is needed more so.
Can’t find it now…I think they where called Ross and it was Red.?.

The phono I have is about 40 yrs old. It comes with rca cables coming out if the body.
My question is how does it know which one to use once I install a amp?

Here is one example of what I might look at…

Some have switchs for line, etc but this one doesn’t. Here’s just a basic amp I’m looking at. Might need to move to a a/v forum!
